HUD & Menu Bugs in Portuguese Version

(DB Genome editor) #1

Been talking Portuguese lessons lately and I started to run DB in that language for a bit of practice. And I came across these issues:

  • Countdown not updating in lobby when joining a match in progress:

As you can see, it only displayed a placeholder, the actual time left was never seen. Pretty sure it happened every time a joined a game in progress.

  • Shuffle vote text too big for vote box:

  • Objective text incomplete:

Possibly because the full text would not fit. I can’t remember what it was, but for sure it was more than “Destroy the (blank)”.

  • I didn’t get a chance to grab a screenshot after I noticed, but I also believe the “Press Space to respawn” text is also incomplete, showing only “Press Space to”. I’ll try to confirm that one.

I’m kind of surprised to see such obvious problems so late in the development process, I guess our Brazilian and Portuguese colleagues are not too keen on reporting issues

Ohh … good catch Djiesse. I am tempted to include a double facepalm … but i also feel the pain of I18n. Also all these long sentences. Brrr. PITA to design the HUD for.

Does anyone know how this part of game development is handled by the devs? Is it “not their problem” because it is shoved to the publishers responsibility? Or does Splash have to rent some translators themselves to get the right texts into the gamefiles?

I also kinda presume that our dear colleagues are used to being treated as not first class citizens concerning 1st world games which were not developed in spanish/portugese speaking countries.

What the heck here it goes, ill double facepalm nevertheless for the sake of doublefacepalming because there are probably some more languages semi-well translated

one more reason to play games in english even if its not your native language

I always play games and watch movies in their original language if I can (even if it means subtitles for the movies). It’s very rare that something doesn’t get lost in a dubbed translation. But since DB is keeping the English voice acting even in other languages, we’re only talking about written text changing here so it should be totally playable in any of the supported languages. Which brings me to this:

As I though, the respawn message is also incomplete.

Maybe I should give the French version a spin also…

I dont want to see that

Some more stuff I picked up:

  • I’m pretty sure that possessive articles “do” and “da” take the gender of the owner, so it should be “do” for male mercs and “da” for female ones. Also Thunder’s pack is not translated at all…

  • Aimee’s pun about the aimer vs the aimee in her merc profile just doesn’t work when translated :o

  • Elite cases are called “Equipments cases”, while equipment cases are called, well, “Equipment cases”…?!?

  • All trinkets translations are missing (bracketed by “!!!”) as well as Coalsplitter’s description’s

  • Many problems with stats not fitting the frames in the profile section

  • As in the French version, the Rain of Fire badge states that you must destroy the EV by yourself (vs doing 50% damage) to earn it

  • Message says that we returned the drug sample, but we’re the attacking team. Not sure if it is a translation error or the old bug about the messages being inverted…

  • Sniper riffle translated as assault riffle in the death ghost

  • As in the French version, “Loadout Cards” is not translated in the barracks menu, but is in the cases descriptions

And a few more:

  • Loads of text which doesn’t fit…

  • This one should be obvious…

Translating “shots hit” to “suffered shots” and “health” to “energy” also sounds awkward.

I’m cringing at some of that Brazilian Portuguese translations :frowning:
