How to start mod making?

(Donpedro) #1

Hi. Im newbie in this part. what can you recommend me to start mod-amking or scripting? I know, the learning will spent a big lot of time. Can you give me some info or links? I know the language what et uses is LUA.

Correction: W:ET coding uses C, LUA is only used in ETPro-micro server mods.
Maps on the other hand use a form of level scripting, similar to RtCW.

You know what got me most comfortable editing the code? Chruker’s Project Bugfix. Once all the bugs are fixed you will have seen parts and get a feel for what they do.

His site is here:
http://games.chruker.dk/enemy_territory/modding_project_bugfix.php

Other than that, just think of what you want to change. For example, if you want to change the location of messages, just search through the sdk for what is allready done, and how the functions are coded. Then it is easiest to almost replicate it, unless you know some C programming allready then I guess that doesn’t need to be said,

Depends on what do you want to mod?

  • maps (mapping, used textures, mapscripts (etpro) or normal etc.)
  • skins
  • sounds
  • models (player- and/or weapon-models)
  • gameplay
  • menus (vsay)
  • all together

You should try to search the forums.
There are some threads discussing this already.

There is a lot of mods and is problem to find mappers and modelers You should try to join eastfront mod ( New) has mappers, modelers and some coder, skinners and texturers http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15768&start=0

How to join without C and LUA skill?

(Donpedro) #8

I decided, i wanto to learn lua now, not C. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not sure if you’re too restricted with only LUA.

On the other hand coded mods aren’t played that much (exception are Pro, Pub, Jaymod and No Quarter).
And LUA mods can be played with Pro (one of the most popular W:ET mods).

I’m programming now in Delphi, so i don’t have time to start C. Lua is easier i think. Don’t think i’m just a naab, i know the mods of ET, if i decide to make minimod i want to do that for etpro.

http://wolfwiki.anime.net/index.php/Lua_Mod_API has everything you need to get started with lua mods in etpro. Be sure to start with the Lua reference manual and Lua book

That said, understanding that the various functions and fields available through the etpro Lua API requires understanding of the underlying gamecode, so to use it effectively you are going to need to learn some C anyway.
