How to restore backupped characters?

I just reinstalled Brink and am wondering how to get my characters back. I made a backup of game.save, but everytime I start Brink, the file is overwritten and and the game prompts me to create a new character. :stroggtapir:

Thank you. The method using +set save_readFile worked; the instructions for “Manual auto-save backups” didn’t, or I didn’t understand them correctly.
