How to play as Thunder?

(AnonyBOSS) #1

Hey all. Kind of a dumb question, but I’m curious, How does one play thunder? I mean, I don’t really know how to play him well. Any tips and tricks from the community? Thanks!

best played when you have a healer and someone who is throwing down ammo like its their job. Other than that, dont be too aggresive, he is really slow and if you go to far in, you will get picked off easily (hence the first comment I made).

Also, pretty obvious, but, use the weapon you like the best/ do the best with. You need every advantage as thunder.

OK. I like trying to be good at every weapon. In other words, Jack=of-All trades and master at some

Havent been him much but ive learned to throw his nades around corners

I find that it’s practically impossible to be near the top of the leaderboard, but maybe that’s just me. IMHO, Thunder is more of a general-purpose merc, but is surpassed by other assault-class mercs (such as frager or nader). His concussion grenades aren’t super effective, but they are workable. I’m guessing that the reason why no one really plays as him as he lacks the usability of other classes.

(solace_) #6

I find this as well, unless of course you have a pocket medic and someone giving out ammo all the time. I notice that with thunder you seem to run out of ammo quickly, faster than other mercs. I don’t know why that is.

(AnonyBOSS) #7

Maybe it’s just the Thunder Paradox? O_o

Jokes aside, I think it’s because you can only really use him somewhat effectively (without support) as a supressive merc. There’s not much more you can do, even when you concus their entire team. You could only take out one or 2 before you get mowed down yourself.

some tips for mk46 thunder:

  • use unshakeable + focus loadout (esp. focus is important)
  • always stay close to cover
  • mk46 is accurate with hipfire for about 20bullets
  • use ADS often: after those 20bullets, at range from cover, whenever you want to gib someone, if you managed to concuss an enemy
  • try to avoid jumping in fight, you will lose too much accuracy, use crouch spam to dodge instead
  • you can bounce conc nades by throwing them high at walls, the higher it bounces the deepe around the angle it will go
  • otherwise throw conc nades as if they were normal explosives, if the nade lands directly on someone they pretty much cant move
  • you are more of a suppressive fire/distraction merc than you are a bully, you will need a medic if you want to push as a pointman

Easy, dont buy the most merc vying for the most useless award. (Thunder - without lightning and Phantom - Why am I still an option)

(SaulWolfden) #10

Phantom is a better Assault than Thunder who is a better Recon than Phantom.

I feel like thunder is more semi support/assault than pure assault like fragger or Nader. Flash bangs can really help your team to clean up and his mk 46 is great after the recent buff , you can easily drop 3 mercs with one mag. Also when you throw his concussion nade , wait for the concussed notification before you run in to make sure they are crippled

(AnonyBOSS) #12

I honestly treat the concussion grenade as a gimmick. The results aren’t always reliable, so when you REALLY need it, it doesn’t work. (I dunno, Murphy’s Law?)

The MK46 . . . Groans. If anyone’s actually seen a lmg, mmg, or hmg in action irl, they would know that you never, ever fire full auto non-stop. And I’m not saying that you should with the MK46, but it really seems that you should when you concuss a good half of the opfor (yes, I’m 2 taticool 5 u XD), you must spray and pray. I don’t know if it’s me, but that’s seems like what needs to happen. And, if you’re suppressing, sometimes that full auto is the only thing that’ll work.

Bang them all. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )

(AnonyBOSS) #14

O_o Mother of God . . . Slowly takes of Aviators

This rotation is the first genuine run with Thunder…and I like him surprisingly. @Icecoal I think your right in him being a mix in both roles & @Szakalot hit it on the money. Treat him like a genuine suppressive machine gunner…using flanks to create crossfires as your team pushes and control your bursts. Use the conc grenade more situationally because it is unreliable as others said.As a tangent, they should have the nade affect only Opfor in the same way stoker molotovs don’t hurt teammates.

Never throw concussion to concuss them.

I’ll be soon writing huge thread about him, but what I can tell you first is to throw concussion to ANNOY enemy, do not throw it for expectation of kills unless the enemy is totally blinded that he/she can’t even check their own mini map.

Conc is still not performing well as killing support skill, so you never expect to kill some one with it unless it is 100% sure. Even though you success to full blind the enemies, you’ll get counter attacked by none-blinded enemies shit tons of time.

Use the conc to annoy them every 15 sec for the most time, because SD buffed it in a worst way at this year Feb.

Best timing to use conc properly is when the whole enemy wave has respawned, and coming through the straight hall ways like Chapel’s mid EV way and U shaped way between Underground first and second phase.

They still didn’t fix the conc’s respawn invincibility ignoring flash bang, so I really recommend you to wipe out the whole enemy wave first, wait for the next one, and flash the hell out of them when they spawn.

About the MK.46, ironsight whenever your aim spreads too much while hip firing. This is basic technique for every other gun that I use, but for MK.46 it is more significant since your biggest advantage is your huge mag capacity that you have to pour the whole bullets without hesitation, worrying about the recoils. Starting spread and first 20 bullets are quite alright after the buff, but still the damage per bullet is SMG level and spreads much faster than Kek-10.

To bad the only 1 of his 3 weapons i dont suck with is the mk

(terminal) #18

Shoot things with a gun

(RedBeard) #19

Easy, Dont.

(AnonyBOSS) #20

I think I got it all figured out now. The MK46 isn’t really a weapon you want to push forward with, but either way, the way to use it I realized is to give it short bursts BUT do it in a way that keeps you safe. (I.E. Peeking out of cover). Yes, it sounds obvious, but clearly I didn’t know how to play Thunder. Thanks for all the help guys!

Happy April Fools Day on the side btw. Cheers.
