how to make a pipe

How can you make a pipe?

(DAbell) #2

Make a block the size you want your pipe to be then with it selected goto the curve menu at the top and then pick cylinder, this will turn your block into a cylinder if you want to give it some thickness use the thicken command at the bottom of the curve menu. This thicken command will offset the cylinder inside a set amount and then cap the open ends.

Hope this helps.

Can pipes (cylinders) only be made on one plane and then must be rotated into position?

I’ve been trying to make a long pipe using the method described above and end up with a really short pipe that is very fat.

Details:
I make a brush that is (grid set at eight) 3 units wide on the x-axis, 3 units tall on the y axis and 100 units long on the z-axis.
I use the make very dense cylinder function and instead of a 100 unit long pipe that is 3x3 sized I get a 3 unit tall pipe that is 100x3 sized going up and down the y axis (instaed of along the z-axis).

try using the diffent views? Left, right, top?

(=PoW= Kernel 2.6.5) #5

I tried that first thing but exact same results.
I originally assumed it worked like some of the other features (patch mesh) and would be related to what view was in the 2D window.
That does not seem to be the case.

BTW - I’m sure I saw a texture of a wall with pipes on it one time in radiant but have been unable to find it again. Anyone else seen this?

I want to do some of that pipe behind the grate stuff you see in MLB Canyon and Castle Attack.

You could make the brush, rotate it untill the long side is vertical, make a pipe out of it and rotatate it the same way back. At least that’s how I solve this problem…

(=PoW= Kernel 2.6.5) #7

I"m guessing that’s the only solution.
I was hoping there was some menu entry or keypress I didn’t know about

Meh, i went and found the pipe textures for you

they are in textures/swf

Shift + S = patches texture editor.
I think Ctrl + N = natural texturing, which is also a usefull shortcut.

Theres also a usefull wall texture with some cables on it in xlab_wall/xwall_c10

I seriously saw the title as how to make a pie…

i’ll need some tin foil, an empty paper towel roll and a ball point pen.

that’s how i read the topic at first.

anyway, if you’re interested in creating your own textures, this may help:

http://www.thedesignworld.com/photoshop-tutorials/web-design/metal-pipe/

there are lots more tuts out there for creating simulated 3d pipes and other shapes to help save brushwork.

I made a pipe for you. download from:

I’m not having a problem making a pipe.
I have already made several.

My problem is the pipe has to be created on the y-axis and then rotated to the axis I actually want it on.

Unlike a patch mesh which can be created on any axis depending on the 2D view window.
