How to Improve Reflexes?

(AlbinMatt) #1

I’ve been playing Phoenix for a while, and rarely came into any scuffles, because of my pocket playstyle. Recently I’ve tried playing with Skyhaggis, and found out just how terrible my reflexes are. I panickly switch between the knife and rifle, and can’t track people, unless I had prepared previously. Any tips on improving?

keep playing against better player and learn how they keep killing you.

for example, newbies might only use skyhammer as ammo guy even tho his arsenal are pretty deadly and one of the most devastating abilities.

also, watch dirty bomb youtube videos, that helps me on shortcuts and weird strategy that are used by higher skill players

Just stick with it and accept that you sometimes have to play worse in the short term to improve in the long term. Force yourself into situations, that are your weak points and focus on them. Just accept that you will die a lot for a while and your panic switching will stop and you will notice that your tracking will improve. Try to learn from each encounter.

you can make fine adjustments to your in-game mouse sensitivity and adjust keyboard poll rates. I only use about 500Hz for my keyboard and mouse, and only 1/3 of my over all mouse sensitivity (CPI).

The rest of reflexes will be done in practice. Check out on YT, Lauren’s Scott’s video on DB. It’s old, but still relevant.

Thanks for all the tips! Fair notice, you’ll be seeing my corpses everywhere.

To start I suggest to focus on support since thats what your good at. If you find a weak enemy then attempt to pick them off, if the enemy is stronger try getting a teamate to help you out to both make your tracking better while lowering the risk of death.

Just keep playing. You’ll end up building some gamesense and reflexes. There’s no miracle methods to become more reactive.

For reflexes? Cocaine, Adderall, and coffee should do the trick. For aiming better you just need to practice while focusing on using your guns rather than your abilities more. Force yourself to play with rifles instead of shotguns and go out of your way to take head on gunfights.

It might also help to play something outside of db like quake. If you have any friends that have a copy of quake live, playing each other using only the lightning gun would probably help a lot with your tracking aim. If you don’t have friends, there are tools you can use solo like Kovaak’s Aim Trainer (https://www.youtube.com/user/KovaaK), the aim training map in CSGO (https://youtu.be/3EjVNXjKCz4), and the lgc3 bot for quake world (http://lgc.quakeworld.nu/?action=about).

Also, if you haven’t already tried a wide variety of mouse sensitivities, you should probably play around with that. As a general guide, most good quake and cs players need to move their mouse around 20-40 cm to do a 360, but it’s mostly preference and there are plenty of good players that use sensitivities higher or lower than that range. Based on what you said in your first post, it sounds like you’re having a hard time controlling your crosshair so your sens is probably too fast for you.

Lowering your mouse sensitivity will make it easier to be consistent with your aim. Not to say you can’t be consistent or aim well with a high sensitivity, you can, but you have more margin of error when your moving your mouse further on your mouse pad to make the same rotation in game. So, if you nervous/tired/whatever it should have less effect on your aim. Regardless, pick a sensitivity that feels right for you and practice to get as comfortable aiming at and tracking heads as possible.

In DB, playing with guns that actually require tracking is a good idea as well. Stay away from burst rifles and shotguns as @KangaJoo mentioned. M4 Sky is a great place to start  Hochfir is probably the closest thing to Quake lightning gun.

For keybinds try to avoid toggle primary and quick use for melee and abilities. And of course, practice with whatever works best for you and get as comfortable as possible.

You can always try running the weapons course for practice on quick aiming. Try to keep moving and only go for head shots. That should help your tracking in terms of lining up the first few shots. After that, it’s on to moving targets in the pubs. Good luck!
