How to group objects

(caelumstarson) #1

How do you group objects? I have a wall in my map that was made by the gtkgensurf plugin. When i put a texture on it the texture gets put on every object instead of over the whole thing. If i could group the objects i could avoid this and give it a more realistic feel.

in your editor select everything you want grouped. then in the 2d window right click then go to func and select func_group

erm, there still all single brushes.

yup there still single brushes. so now your going to have to learn terrain blending

Yes, they stay single brushes, but that group of brushes is an independant group of brushes (called an entity). The worldspawn (group of brushes that aren’t any entity) is also an entity. Spawn points, tanks, etc are also entities.

In the editor, you’ll find if you have an entity with multiple parts then you can select one, move it, undo, then you’ll have every part of that entity selected.

You might find that this tutorial looks better and has fewer brushes (which is a good thing)

instead of using undo to select them all, use ctrl+alt+leftclick in the 3d window or (if there is nothing in the way) you can also do it in the 2d windows. i find it easier to do this way since i usually work in the dark and don’t want to hunt for the backspace key.

while speaking of entity selecting, if you need to select a particular brush of an entity but it’s buried beneath or in another brush(such as an origin or clip brush), simply select an exposed brush of that entity and hit TAB to cycle through all the brushes(one at a time) in that entity.

and one more thing to add about selecting, alt+shift+leftclick will cycle through the entities(or individual world spawn brushes) beneath your mouse pointer in either 2d or 3d windows.

This is a good little tutorial on modifying terrain within Radiant.

@caelumstartson - creating the terrain in Radiant is fine and will teach you a lot about vertex control. There are a couple of tools for terrain making also: EasyGen; Fate.
