How to create torches, flames, fires and that kind of stuffs?

Hello,
as topic i would like to know how to create my own torch with torch-holder. I made some research thru the forum but with few results. I downloaded a prefab from a site to see how to do it, but when i compile the flame is not showned, and also the texture in GTKradiant is called Flame2 but i can’t find it in the /textures folder.

any suggestion/redirection to another thread about these things is very wolcome.

Thank you again,
Mike

For the torch-holder: just make one with few small brushes, make them func_group… and u have your own prefab.

For the flame: you don’t find that texture because its a shader. Look at a map where there are flames used (Caen for example), and see whether they are in the shader. I don’t know enough about shaders/haven’t done one yet so I can’t help u further. For a very start maybe just make an oddly shaped brush and give it a light-emitting light orange tex (u need to do a shader for that yourself of course).

For the flickering light effects on the walls around the torch you need dlights. Right-click into some window, then select dlight. Read the info on that entity closely, you ll find a lot of info in there. Try all the stuff out too (preferably in a box-map cuz u there s a lot to test and u always need a full LIGHT-compile).
Warning though: that kind of light is real bad for gameperformance if used too often and in places where i can be seen from lots of (outside)spots.

Hi McNite, thank you for replying.
In my case, i don’t really need the flickering effect, at least not now…
as i am working on a ancient building,i should illuminate it as naturally as possible… i mean, torches on the walls, long torch-holders on the stairs, that kind of things. I think a simple aura-light from a flame would be enough - but i dunno how to make the moving flame.
I will follow your suggestion about opening the Caen map ASAP.

where can i find Caen .map?

(]UBC[ McNite) #5

LOL

Its a map you can play… so have a look at the pk3, that s what i meant.

sorry,
i already played Caen, i thought you was talking about the .map file.
So your suggestion is to unzip a .pk3 which contains flames and see the .shader? as far as i know, a shader is a series of modification of a texture… but the point is: where can i find the basic fire texture to animate it? the one who looks great at least. Of course i can draw a flame or take a picture and create the texture, but atm i don’t really know how to build a shader over that to make it brighty…

i hope i explained well my question.

I found the answer in this thread.

Seems i only have to take the right shadered texture… i’ll try asap and let you know.

Just so you know, that an animated flame is created by shader qualities. Try and follow: A shader is made that utilizes an image but sometimes it isn’t named the same thing. So the shader’s image you see in the editor is only there to alert you to what it will closely resemble.

textures/sfx/wilsflame works as a flame(may have a 1 or 2 on the end) but there is not a texture in the sfx folder called WILSFLAME. It is an animated shader that utilizes several other images.

I have one for you to look at in a .map file @ www.spyjuice.com >>> after_beginner_tutorial.pk3

EB, thank you for your explanations. LxPower, thank you for the link, that torch in the Lights section is just what i was searching for! i will download it and analyze as EB suggested. Thank you again for the support!
