How to counter against thunder?

(kamido) #1

As stated, how can i counter thunder specifically the concussion grenade, i need some enlightenment?

More often when i meet someone play as thunder, 80% of the time it is almost impossible to dodge the grenade. i can accept that if the grenade land within my range i get stunned and slow, but the flash is just pla(i)n annoyance.(reminds me of payday2 where flash grenade appear from thin air)
If there is more than one thunder in the game, literally I’m staring at blank screen half of the match.

Most of the time not staring at the grenade when it explode still got me flashed, sometimes i just got flash without knowing where the grenade is (the red marker on explosive object).

Taking into consideration of ping and my reaction time, i have less than half a second (or even less if time taken for server to registered my character model not staring at the grenade) to react to the grenade.

So am i forced to run away from thunder’s whenever i see one?

Yes. Run away. You nailed it. There are some mercs which are supposed to have presence on the battlefield, and when they are paired with a competent player it eccentuates this largely. These mercs are the assualts, and I find that none of them have a hard counter, that their only counter is fighting them.

Also, half a second to react is good enough. Knowing that the reaction time of a person is ~250ms, you will still have another 250ms to look away, and you do not have to even turn around, just look down, which is more beneficial for fighting back as well.

He does not need a hard counter, as no other assualt merc has unless the player using the merc plays them stupidly(i.e. fragger cooking grenade infront of an enemy). The only change Thunder needs is a cooldown increase to the conc, as people seem to forget that yes, you will be stunned, but that does not mean you will be dead.

If it helps, keep an ear out for the conc wherever it’s used. His cooldown is something like 11-12 seconds, not entirely sure.
You can also try to bait the conc by peeking, but it can still hit you with its speed reduction.
If you unexpectedly confront him head-on, try to get close to him. He’ll be less likely to conc you if he risks hitting himself with it.

Ultimately though I have to agree with running away. Don’t sustain an engagement or you’re just asking for it. He’ll get you every now and then no matter what you do.

by running away you just saved you and your medic from being ambushed by thunder.

(Your worst knifemare.) #5

To beat thunder you need to be thunder.

thank for the advice though.
I like the idea of counting his grenade cooldown.(17secs i believe)
Avoiding is better than engaging, but that will only solve part of the problem.
eventually you will have to deal with him somehow.

maybe it’s not a bad idea after all.

To everyone unsure about the conc cooldown, it is currently 15 seconds, two seconds shorter than fraggers nade. This is quite a short cooldown for something that provides great power, thus I think a 18 second cooldown will suffice.

(Herr_Hanz) #8

or just 17 seconds like fraggers nade.

(SaulWolfden) #9

Easiest way to fight Thunder is to shoot his big fat head.

Play in DBN and ban him every match.

Any fire support or sniper.

(CyberVonCyberus) #13

if you are playing redeye turn on your IR googles as they let you see throught the conc if you are ph4t00m go invisible and hide in a corner if you are in a group and know there is a thunder nearby spread out to avoid mass headache

(Tanker_Ray) #14

@paramountGasoline Yeah. Just like me.

@SaulWolfden It sounds funny, but it really is. His head is still way too huge. No joke, larger than Rhino’s head, I’m serious.

@sweetColumn Perfect example for why I call him Thundermelon.

… are you kamido lagger that I know in Asia server? I hope not.

This is ‘I am Thunder’, or ‘Thunder Pro’.

If the conc flies in while you are shooting the other guy, that’s the right usage of conc, so there is no way to avoid it. I agree.

BUT, if you are facing Thunder in your line of sight, there is certain timing that he will throw his conc.

This skill chance fight is a key to win against him, or even Thunder mirror match.

As someone who played Thunder more than anyone, I can admit just like @Jokder said it IS possible to avoid the conc, or just affected by slight slow at least, though it sounds non-sense.

Even 15 sec is very short CD, 15sec of blank time isn’t a tiny adavantage.

If you see the red projectile coming in, then just turn around!

I have a lot of experience when I even won against enemy Thunder with Thunder WHILE I was fully slowed.

Biggest thing Thunder users are afraid of is slowed but not flashed enemies that are still able to shoot Thunders back. Eventhough you fail to kill him, and end up damaging him, this is still very crippling to Thunder. Slow is the problem, but wobbling screen isn’t.

Thunder is still very easy to kill with headshots,(sadly, even with same Thunder.) or with your team mates to concentrate fire on him.

(kamido) #15

That’s me actually, i hope people can really forget that name. .sad.
and, hello.

I’ll nail it to my head

It very much possible to avoid the grenade.
Because i got this “wtf flash ?, i didn’t even stare at it?” or "flashed? where grenade is " everytime, it’s annoying.

Like everyone said, just turn around when the red projectile come flying, but to me it’s like 50/50 chance of avoiding getting flash.

Getting concuss is minor issue for me as i still can see at least where my shot go. Wanting to learn how to avoid flash is my main concern.
