How much of Games for Windows crap can we expect?

I’ve had my share of ‘oh god, this is so stupid’ with games for windows in the past and I hope for Brink, ‘Games for Windows’ is just a bunch of words and nothing more.

Fingers crossed.:o

keeping them crossed too.
i got arkham through steam, and yet had to set up another account for windows live to play it… i was sitting 10 minutes in complete bafflement in front of this windows live pop up… useless!!

GFW is a series of standardized technical requirements that a game needs to adhere to, to earn the tag. You must be confused with GFWLive that has all of the ‘crap’ you speak of… none of which is in Brink.

Well, good news keep piling up. Nice, I like.

(madoule) #5

exactly, damn good news. thanks for straighting that out for me…

(Seyu) #6

Would the disc version require the Steam DRM?

(LyndonL) #7

Yes. The game will require unlocking on Steam.

Yep, same thing. Got Dirt on Steam, requires games for windows live account. Took me a couple days to finally get it working. On top of that, the GFW Live overlay doesn’t match up in resolution or soemthing I I have to click way off of the buttons in order for the dialog box to accept the mouseclick. It’s confusing when you are clicking on a selection but really the clcik is for the selection above your pointer.

Hate it, I’m now carefully looking at games before I buy them on Steam to make sure they don’t require a Live account.

Someone really should take issue with MS on this. The GfW initiative is very a very positive thing. The problem comes from GfWLive mimicking it in many ways which leads consumers to thinking they are one in the same.

My favourite GFWL faux pas is when you haven’t played a GFWL game for a while, and then buy a new GFWL game. The stupid thing makes you update straight away or basically lose all functionality. So you update (of which it barely gives you any feedback as to how long it will take). Then it makes you reload the game, and THEN decides that there’s a SECOND update that it needs. And then repeat the process. I once had to restart my game 4 times - it took about 60-90 minutes to get into the game!

Unfortunately some games that have GFWL are still good games so I still buy them, but then I cringe when the “Press Home” dialog initially pops up.

My Mrs computer had a corrupted version of GFWL on it the other week and NO GFWL games would run. It took a while to put 2 and 2 together to work out they were GFWL games, and that we needed to reinstall GFWL.

Thank God Brink doesn’t use GFWL

…GFWL.

…gfwl…

(Cankor) #12

GFWL = godawful?

(DarkangelUK) #13

As SockDog said, the problem is people think Games For Windows (GFW) and Games For Windows Live (GFWL) are the same thing… and those equally not grasping the difference will be put off unnecessarily.

(madoule) #14

that fear actually forced me yesterday night to make a decision. i pre-ordered it via steam, nothing can lessen my anticipation now. and i already let steam create a desktop shortcut…

(tokamak) #15

Yeah I wonder why Brink wants to tarnish it name with GFW.

(SockDog) #16

Because GfW is a good thing when you understand what it means. The tarnish comes from everyone thinking it’s the same as GfWL.
