How Many Team Objective FPS Games Have You Played?

(Jimmy James) #1

I wanted to get a general idea of how many team-oriented, objective-based FPS games people played before Brink.

For me: Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was the first, but I’ve also played Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, America’s Army, and Call of Duty (not the original but one of the sequels). So, basically I’ve played five total including Brink.

Just wondering what other, similar games Brink owners have played before this game.

Multiple Battlefields, MAG, Killzone 2 & 3, COD (yes its hard but they do have objectives hidden in there lol), and prob a few more that Im forgetting. But Brink is the ****znit

(Bittermetal) #3

Counter-Strike, original Team Fortress, BF, BF2, BF2142, BFBC2, TF2, Quake ET, Tribes, Tribes 2, Tribes Vengence, All CoD game and expansions, All MoH games and expansions…except the most recent MoH revival.

I know there are more I am forgetting.

BFBC2 and Brink are the only two games I’ve put any REAL time into.

I could have added the CoDs, but their objective-based games, well most people playing them aren’t too terribly focused on the objectives. I probably could have added TF2, but I’ve played all of a dozen matches. I’m also not going to count the beta MoH I played, though I did enjoy its objective-based game mode (can’t remember what it’s called).

there are only 3 i know and played. wolf et, etqw and brink.

i dont consider checkpoints, flags or anything like that objective based shooters though.

building a bridge, escorting a tank, blowing up a gate, escorting a tank, blowing up another gate, escorting some more, blow up a wall, blow up two fences, plant dynamite and blow up something like a fuel dump.

this i consider objective based. dont know any other games beside wolf:et, etqw and brink that give that diversity.

Counter Strike. Plant the bomb escort VIP, Extraction… all game mode on early CS. the precursor to all these other objective based games.

BF2 super objective based, especially if you have a good Battle Commander giving all the squad leaders proper objectives.

BF212 Titan mode - stop opposing team from activating silos so they will not fire on your Titan. Opposite -Launch yourself on the Titan to take out the reactor and bring the Titan down.

BFBC2’s RUSH mode. Objective is to take out the M-Com stations.

To tell you the truth, I’ve been gaming for far to long to remember all of the games that I’ve played.

Don’t feel rained on Term. I’m 37, which is the recorded avg age of today’s gamer. Go figure.

Built my first comp in '98. Haven’t bought a computer since. Always build my own for work and gaming.

Lol, well I guess building one is cheaper than a pre-made.

I’ll concede that CS (2000) came out before ET (2003), but I’ve never played it.

Simply look at the pile of game boxes stacked next to your computer, that’s how I keep track.

-JJ

EDIT: How many of the FPS games being mentioned are Death Match and not actually objective-based?

Sadly I cannot do that since I’ve always been a console gamer. SNES-Xbox 360 and everything in between.

(Bittermetal) #13

I was with you up until PS3 and 360. Never bought one.

Objective seems to be getting loosely flung around here. In TDM there’s objectives… kill the other team. Probably would’ve been best to state multi-objective driven gameplay, and I’m guessing you’re meaning the likes of RtCW, W:ET, ET:QW, Brink. Most of the other games mentioned are more akin with TDM but driven towards a common primary goal of planting a bomb etc. Just my opinion anyway… and going by my opinion I say RtCW, W:ET, ET:QW and Brink. Going with the loose classification… probably most… except tribes.

I feel like sequential multiple objective team games are in their own category separate from simply team based objective games. As such I’ve played:

Wolf ET
Quake Wars
TF2
Bad Company 2 (Rush mode)
Brink

If you are talking about all team based objective games in general including ones with a single objective or “musical flags” as it were (BF2 etc) there are probably too many to list.

Does no one remember the Battle Commander in BF2. His whole job was dealing out objective to the Squad leaders who then were tasked with commanding their squad to get it done. Repair UAV, Disable UAV, properly dropping supply crates… and more

(General Techniq) #17

On a side-note… Brink douch-bag-ly explained in three simple terms:
-CTF
-Defend and Destroy
-Escort

Of course, I’m not a douche, so I would never really go there.

–I’ve seen a few developers spam their games with objectives over the years, then try to pass a cluster-fruck free-4-all off as tactical, team-oriented, objective-based gameplay, and fail miserably.
–Brink, pretty much is spammed to hell with objectives, in much the same way. However, the devs managed to make sense of it all and provided for a smooth objective based experience in their ATTACK/DEFEND game (with the exception of the Hack objective… reached one objective too far right there. Also, follow objective? Really? Right up there with Level 20 easy being insanely more difficult than Lower ranked hard).
–In all rationality, it seems that the devs might have originally been going for a very tactical shooter experience, but I’d assume that was all thrown out the window somewhere around the time that they decided to go cartoon.

It’s all in the presentation, really. Brink is nowhere near the cutting edge of modern objective-based FPS gaming, but at least Splash Damage delivers their take (a common outline) on objective-based gameplay with some solid competency (minus the freaking fugly outlines, next time around, please).

To date, MAG is still the most immersive team-oriented objective-based FPS I’ve played. It took objective gameplay to the point where you no longer consciously thought of them as such. Objective was everything and everything was objective (weird, I know).
I hope that’s not the last game I see a “frago” in.

But, Brink’s objective wheel and outlines can be fun too.

(Jimmy James) #18

Heh, granted. But I’m specifically referring to non-Deathmatch team multiplayer games where you can choose a class with unique abilities and complete non-combat-oriented-objectives.

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #19

I said 5+ since I count BC2: rush mode as an objective mode.

As far as the whole “which game spawned objective gaming” sub thread, I always considered the Team Fortress mods as the base for RTCW and CS. Some of the objectives in TF mods are present in later games. I didn’t play any DOOM2 mods though.

(iFork) #20

I’m surprised no one here plays L4d or 2, a good multiplayer team objective game where TEAMWORK and a HIGH SKILL LEVEL comes into play + it made being a medic here way easier since I have to revive, heal and give pills to teammates being or in front of me whilst being continuously bashed by zombies
