How long does it take you to make a map (2nd map +)

(Ifurita) #1

This poll is really targetted at people who have gotten over the initial learning curve and have gotten thru at least one map, released or not. I’m curious as to how many man-hours you typically put in before a map is released.

I’m asking in terms of man-hours, because it’s a more relevant measure of working time vs chronological time. Plus, you might be working with multiple mappers, all of whom are contributing hours.

Cheers

I honestly do not know Ifurita.
I am torn for an answer…I will come back in a few days.

i voted 100-150 but thinking about it abit more i would guess much less then 100 but its hard to tell.

(Ifurita) #4

I’m thinking more like 150-200 hours per map

(Ifurita) #5

2 hours a night over 3 months is 200 hours easily

(Detoeni) #6

First map took me about 7 weeks to beta, then about 3 months fine tuning.
MP & SP Korfe took a year (10 to 15 hours a week, total hours? you work it out :eek2: (never again, it was just too much)) Bergen was about 6/7 weeks for the first beta. Current project about three months so far, it will be about the same to beta.

i guess also alot depends on how big the map is and how difficult it is to make and also how much custom content you put in it. the vaulted cieling in cathedral took a few days just experimenting trying to find the best way to do what i wanted. then taking photos and making textures took along time as well. Where as summerpalace which has no custom content and no difficult brush work took almost no time at all.

(Ifurita) #8

Yeah. I think I’d agree with Det that it seems like 6-8 weeks for a beta, then 3 months of tuning, depending on league schedules and amount of quality feedback and testing. Maybe I’m overestimating the hours I put into a given map.

100-150 is my vote, but i spend more than 2hrs a night,i usally map in 12hr+ stints due to work and RL stuff, as far as getting custom content goes, a friend collected nealry all custom content on tinternet and sent it me via BT, so now i have over 1gb of texture’s and models on a seperate drive which has speeded things up alot.
most of my ctf maps took like 60 hrs to build then usally 1-3 tests, but i aint done anything league wise etc…

(etmap05) #10

260 Hours -300 hours

(.Chris.) #11

ive put 150-200 but saying that its only a guess iam still trying to get Wolken3 to public release and wolken2 to beta1 for testing, before that my first wolken map took months and months only to be cancelled :disgust: my other maps before that took bout 100 hours ish but my current work are taking bit longer :bored:
quickest time made a map was bout 10 hours over 3 days was only a small ctf map and was converted to powerball map too in that time, dunno if gunna release any of them 2 tho.

(Ifurita) #12

Funny, I’m the single vote right in the middle

(BXpress) #13

…remagen…^^

(mrfin) #14

Hard one to measure - there are so many variables

BLOODY AGES

Slightly less time thanks to help from mapping types on this forum

(carnage) #15

i think there will be no universal answer to this question for people in the mapping comunity

it depends how ambitious there map is, the custom content part, and the size
as well as how mutch time they have and how mutch they are willing to spend doing mapping

does anyone think up a map and think well in real life ime not gon have time to make that so ill just put this here instead :???: i doubt it so i recon it will take different amounts of time for every map (but still take ages)

(]UBC[ McNite) #16

A lot of time depends on how much you care about the map actually looking good… which means u can put much time into custom textures (i actually made a trip to an old town named Wernigerode to get decent pics of walls, windows etc.), the lighting and how much you care about making the inner rooms look real and “work”.

(EB) #17

Wow, the 250 -300 is winning ? Holy Crap !!! They’re just maps , that can’t be right.

(Loffy) #18

I guess I spend atlest 200 hours on a map before it looks alright and the script is fully functional.
Note: I tend to think: This little addition (alteration) will take no time - whereas it actually takes much longer.
I also build stuff too big. Players look like ants besides huge houses. But that’s another forum thread

I also build stuff too big.

That costed me about 2 weeks for total re- and downsizing of almost all buildings on The River II… after I had found out about cg_thirdpersonview and saw that I had screwed up the dimensions a bit :banghead:
But its a mistake that you only do once, in your first map, I d say. After that you know the dimensions and all the standard-heights/sizes of brushes you need to give the map a good moving flow.
