I have been holding off on buying phantom for a long time as I’ve been waiting for him to be buffed. With this recent update of making him harder to see while moving slowly, does this make him finally worth the 50,000 credits? What sort of play styles suit this new update and how can one get to the top of the leaderboard with him? I’d like to hear from you phantom veterans out there on what they think, and the secret to their success.
How is Phantom now?
The buff barely affected him cause you hardly move slowly and he’s still pretty easy to see even when you are.
I’ve purchased him a little while ago and his viability is completely based on your skill level. If you’re an average player (rarely achieving top 3 in your matches, negative KD, etc.) he will be extremely difficult or impossible to use and do well with.
The buff is no reason to go blow your credits. However, if you understand the play style as it stands now, and are a decent player Phantom can be used and can do very well in matches.
If you’re not so good at the game, go for Rhino if you don’t already have him. Can’t do bad with Rhino
Thing is, if I wanna kill people, I’ll just play Fragger. Cause he can do it so much better than Phantom can, and has access to better weapons, more health, and has an ability that actually excels at what it’s meant to do.
If you want to use the Katana only don’t waste your credits. If you like being able to kneel and wait for people to pass by and then shoot them in the back he’s great. And it’s still fun to use the shield in interesting ways to prevent death or give you an advantage in a fight.
He’s not a good choice for 5v5 competitive play due to his lack of utility but he’s fun on a pub. There are a lot more Phantom’s playing now and almost all of them are actually using their guns.
Have you tried toggling sprint off or as Amerika suggests crouch walk. Both will render you nearly invisible even on Underground (first area).
Anyways, the recent buff makes him feel like pre-nerf Phantom, but as they intended him to be. Would love to get the HP back or some speed to compensate for the HP loss.
Well thing is, he’s fun using but the refractive armor is really useless against experienced players because first of all, they would hear you and then eventually spot you out which makes the ability literally useless. And if you are flanking and wanna lunge attack them with the katana, the katana’s lunge attack is still bugged and it’s range is shorter than the slash attack.
When you aren’t moving or moving slowly they can’t hear you. Basically, if you’re trying to melee only and trying to sprint at people then the recent buff does not help you at all. But it’s a huge buff if you use your gun.
Fiends don’t let friends melee only. Stop it!

As fun as getting snikty-snikt kills are; even Wolverine understood the time to cut someone up into ribbons and time to grab an assault rifle and rock’n’roll on the enemy.

@Amerika I’m not trying to melee only…of course I know when to use my gun, I’m saying when you are flanking and trying to backstab someone, that’s the quickest way to clear them out at short range when they don’t notice what’s happening, but since the refractive armor is pretty loud, experienced players would’ve already heard you -.-"
If you think they are going to hear you then you stop before they do and you shoot them in the back. Going in for the melee kill is risky and has a lower percentage of working so I’m not sure why so many people insist on trying to do it. And if you were actually behind them you could remove the cloak and run at them too or wait for them to start firing so they most likely can’t hear you coming.
You can’t say something like, “refractive armor is useless against experienced players” and not say, “it’s useless because I tried to melee them and they noticed me”. According to what you said you were trying to melee somebody, got noticed and killed. When you could have flanked them, not been noticed and shot them in the back. Or used any of the other options which makes Phantom a bit more of a high skill-cap merc than he originally was.
I think you might have seen some of my videos on YT with Phantom. The most recent one from last week has me flanking a lot and shooting people before they even notice I’m nearby as opposed to closing the distance to attempt a melee hit. Not only because it’s higher percentage for me to kill them but because it leaves me in a less open spot as I can shoot from a better spot than I can melee from. In that same video I did use melee on a few people…when the situation called for it. But it wasn’t my go-to.
ive seen phantoms adapt almost an entirely new playstyle recently. i’m really ahving fun fighting against them and it feels like they finally got some counterplay. now most of them just kinda wait for you to come to them, or just croutch around, searching for a victim. sure, you can still get one shot if he sneaks up correctly, but atleast you can see him coming most of the time, or if not, it just means that they’re really skilled. i think his stealth should get buffed, increased cooldown, but only deactivates when you get hit by a bullet. in other words, i think almost infinite stealth would make them a viable choice, since he could disrupt the enemy team heavily if he picks the right moment to jump out of stealth. even though that would be cool, i still dont expect him to become viable just from that.
