How does one gain rank in competitive mode?

(vanqu1sh) #1

Hi.

Semi-new player to DB here, first time posting on the forums. I hope it’s in the correct place. I’m about 180 hours into the game and I’m level 22. I’ve probably played about 15-20 or so competitive matches, and since I’ve never found a clear answer to this anywhere on the forums: how does one rank up in competitive mode?

I’m currently gold 3 and I have no idea what I need to be doing to rank up to gold 2. I’ve read on a forum somewhere that you need to “win 5 competitive matches in a row”, however I’ve won 11 in a row since becoming Gold 3 and haven’t ranked up. I’ve also read that it’s based on the skill of your opponents, however the game that made me rank up from Gold 4 to Gold 3 was against two level 7 guys, one level 9, and two level 12’s, one of whom ragequit. This has left me very confused.

Does anybody actually know the answer, or is the system a secret?

Thanks.

The ranking system in this game is really odd. You gain “momentum” or MMR by getting good scores against good players. The less balanced the match, the less MMR you gain, or at least that is how it should work in theory. Not really sure if it actually works in action.

There’s no official information about what exactly determines your rank. Your personal performance (score? K/D?) may very well have an impact on it.

(N8o) #4

Doubtful that K/D would have any kind of impact on your MMR considering this is an objective based game. Higher score is probably the determining value.

To be honest, did one rank gold5-gold4 in I’d think 10(first rating)+5±? games, while trying to play vs. cheaters and mostly vs. my own team’s lvl5/6s, looking around this NEW? map?
I doubt there is more than k/d in work for now.
Probably not done enough games, but not enough motivation, to do so, too. Deleting all the competetive-missions for a while, and at least for now.

I bet you it just uses some minor variation on the Elo system. Everything uses the Elo system. It’s probably Elo with some baffles, I bet you a pint.

Sorry, I don’t gamble when it comes to something serious like a pint. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks everyone for your input. So tl;dr: there’s no real official information about how the rank-up system works, but the general consensus is that it’s some kind of MMR system?

Well when you put it that way…

Basically just do your best.

It’s most likely an ELO system that works like any other game with matchmaking. If you play weaker rated players and win you gain very little. If you play much higher ranked players you gain incredibly quickly. So if you took a couple of matches off of people who were cobalt elite you’d rank up super fast. But if you take match after match against bronzes you’ll very slowly gain the minimum rating.

Most likely there is probably two ratings. Your current ranking and your projected ranking. WoW arena has this. Your team might be 1700 rated but due to your wins your projected rating is 2400. So you get matched up with 2000-2400 ranked players and if you win you go up in points extremely fast and if you start to lose it will lower your projection. So it gets highly skilled players to a rank quickly so they don’t just destroy a ton of lesser skilled opponents. I honestly wish that DB had a similarly transparent system.

(vanqu1sh) #11

I’m familiar with the ELO system, having come from quake live myself. Thanks for the explanation

As an addendum, is there a reason why I rarely, if ever, get matched up with people around a similar level to my own? Most people I seem to play are around levels 10-15, and most are between Silver 2 and Gold 4. Makes it harder to get “meaningful” wins. :frowning:

Is it because I’m playing in a queue with two friends who are level 10-11 most of the time I play matchmaking?

I went from gold 4 to cobalt in about 100 wins 25 losses, give or take a few

Gold4 was my rank after 10 games too btw

(Funkmaster_Rick) #13

Though this isn’t terribly relevant, I’d like to point out that it’s not ELO - it’s not an acronym or anything like that. It’s just the Elo system. It was designed by a fellow named Arpad Elo, and is simply named after him. =3

Common usage changes the way words are used and spelled all the time. It’s been “ELO” in pretty much every single game I’ve ever seen and most people are familiar with it. So, in that regard, Elo has transformed into ELO

But that’s a neat bit of trivia I did not know!

Damn. That is pretty lucky.

I know some sad folks who played everyday for about 6 weeks to go from Gold 1 to Cobalt 3.

(SteelMailbox) #16

You don’t, I got downgraded to silver 2 for being in a team of 3 people.
It was 3v5 and I get downgraded thank you game I fucking hate you.

I was just boosted from Silver 2 to Gold 5 after a few wins with my clan. Seems like a big jump for only 3 games. Especially considering I did rather poorly imo, but apparently not in the game’s opinion.
