How does Character system and level up work?

Do you have one rank and can freely change between Characters or does each character have there own rank?

Actually it’s both: you (the player) have an overall level that goes up as you play with any merc, but each merc also has its own level that only goes up based on the XP you gained while playing with that specific merc.

Right now player levels unlock new mercs while merc levels unlock merc-specific augments and taunts.
