How do you all buy your mercs?

(Drifter) #1

Howdy folks, I’m still a newbie at this game. I still have just over a week of play beneath my belt right now. Since I only have 3 mercs unlocked right now (got the free Fragger code, he’s pretty cool) I was wondering how you all chose which mercs to buy. I’ve been playing Nader this week and she is pretty fun, however I’m finding out that I’m still pretty bad at her. But hey, I know everyone has to start somewhere.

I’ve been looking at some other mercs who have seemed fun but I don’t want to waste my first buy on someone who I won’t like. I know that’s what free rotation is for, but I was just curious to see if people always try to wait it out and test out new mercs or just buy them willy nilly.

Thanks though guys, this game seems really fun still and looking forward to more!

I generally buy all of them.

However, you should probably wait to try them on free rotation. Otherwise just try and win some of those giveaways on the dev stream maybe? Easy way to get free mercs that you are unsure about.

It really comes down to your playstyle imho. Different mercs play in different ways. Although bushwacker is a fairly good all around merc. Big bonus is that he can do the objective as well.

tl;dr … test them out during free weeks before buying them unless you’ve got that fat bank roll and can afford to just buy them all and support the game

Don’t buy arty. Trust me.

Sawbonez is pretty fun and fulfills two roles (slayer / medic). Try him next time he’s on free rotation!

I have a lot of fun with Bushwhacker as well.

I was able to play during closed beta so I got to try a lot of the characters that have come out recently during that time. If a brand new one comes out that I didn’t get a chance to play before, I would definitely test it on a free week before buying.

There are a few that i really enjoyed playing during closed that I’m looking forward to picking up when they’re released in open.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to win some through the dev giveaways but alas my luck is always garbage haha.

Bushwacker was around for a bit when I first started and he was really fun. In TF2 my favorite class is Engi so it reminded me of that. Turret is fun and a big plus. Fletcher also interests me with the bombs, I’ve been dominated by a few good ones lately and have been wondering about him.

Sawbonez looks interesting as well! I like Aura for reviving people, and the medkits from him seem good as well. I’ll try him next time, thanks!

If you haven’t got an engi I’d definitely say to get one (Proxy, Bushy or Flecther) All have their pros and cons but all will help your team out with their ability to repair/defuse/plant quicker.

I bought Fletcher a little while back and it took me some time to get used to him (plus some rebinding of keys) but he’s quickly becoming one of my favourites. Plus the Arnuld reload is the coolest animation in the game

Proxy is great if you like the Scout type class. She’s quick and will get you places fast. Her mines are good for covering objectives or flanking routes and she can be used with shotguns or SMGs (or a mix of both with sidearms) depending on your loadout preference.

Bushy is a solid Merc with arguably the best SMG in the game, the Kek-10. Part of the fun with him is experimenting with turret locations. Plus he’s got a cool hat.

I admit that i bought all 3 Bundles for them extra Elite Cases+3 Mercs for 20 bucks, i think its a fair deal.
But mostly play Proxy, Aura and Nader. Most other Mercs i did not even touch for more then 20 minutes yet, but i am fairly new to this Game 80ish Hours in and i think there will be plenty of time to play all of them.

Yeah, an engineer definitely seems like a good buy. Maybe I might pick up that Bushwacker, since for now I can get my explosion fix from Fragger.

And yeah, if I like the game enough I might throw some money down upon it. I’m just holding back for now so I don’t put it down and end up dropping it. I’d love to support them, I just don’t want to jinx myself like I have before.

I got the Merc Starter Pack, totally worth it (maybe a little less so while Fragger is basically free). Bought Nader for 10 bucks right after, and got Sparks once she got released. They seemed really fun from gameplay videos and I didn’t feel like waiting for the next free rotation.
I have yet to buy a merc from my credits, they’re just sitting there unused :expressionless:

(DinkinFlicka) #9

So far I’ve only bought Proxy w/credits. You get a bunch for rank 2 and 4 I think? Got Fragger w/a free PC Gamer code but Proxy is just useful in so many situations. Plus I like the faster mercs even though you get dropped pretty quick.

as people already said: if you like the game buy one of the bundles or the starter pack to support the devs.
after that just do the missions and play the game.

Or use credits on mercs and money on loadouts. you still support the devs but it can be both cheaper and less hassle to get the loadout you really want.

you can easily earn 50K credits within 2 weeks to buy mercs.
dont waste credits on cases tho unless you already got the mercs you want.
its simply not worth it if you still want more mercs.

(Lenny) #11

So far I have bought Vassili, Phantom, and Nader with just in game credits.

(BanHammer) #12

I’ve bought all my with ingame credits or from giveaways.

(UnlikeTeddy) #13

For me I tried them on free rotation but I bought the mercs that are needed like an objective runner and such and then I bought mercs that seemed fun.

(Fleshpound) #14

I just get them by ingame credits or giveaways.

Like 0% always for codes on streams or other things.

… juuuuk grinding :< Advice time!

Get the starterspack in the steam shop, If you feel this is your next big game it’s pretty decent in terms of “bang for your buck.”

It comes with 5 mercs and 50k ingame currency and 2 elite cases for around 25 euro’s. (That’s the price of a “new” game.) Then, use the 50k to buy 3 bronze loadouts for the 3 mercs that offer you the most versatility ingame (like objective specialist/medic/ammo) and just unlock the rest of the bronze loadouts/mercs as you play the game.

The developers get to order some sandwiches while you play the game with great mercs/loadouts. And you are done.

I been playing since midway through the closed beta and i bought the merc starter pack which gives you five mercs then i got 3 or 4 others with in game credits and because i got tired of grinding i bought phantom and kira with real money. As far as which ones to get id say if you liked engineer in TF definitely get fletcher, proxy or bushwacker you wont regret it theyre all fun in their own way and very useful in different sittuations.

An easy way to pick a merc too is just seperate them into their categories like engineer (objective specialist), artillery, recon, or medic and then figure out what you want to focus on or sounds fun next. Then once you got the category read up about the mercs and then pick one. Hope that helps and welcome to Dirty bomb.

(Crunchy_Donut) #17

For me I do half and half. I am OK with spending some money to get a merc because I am enjoying the content Dirty Bomb has to offer and supporting the Dev team makes it a double win. For the gold it is a slower process overall, but do the missions and it speeds up a bit.
