How do I Turret.

(Eox) #1

Right now I feel like I am asking the most stupid question ever…

So yeah, I’ve just bought Bushwhacker today. The primary weapon ? It’s the KEK, it’s awesome, etc… But that turret, am I actually using it wrong ? Because I just feel like I can’t make it work decently.

I just can’t manage to trap more than one guy with it. And this is only if I am actually very lucky or if I am playing in a server full of low level players. Most of the time people will spot the turret almost instantly and get rid of it very quick. It’s simple, my turret almost always dies in a span of ten-twelve seconds. At this point it almost feels like the turret has a timer on it… And of course I can’t use it offensively very well too since the turret’s setup time is kinda long. In every single match, the turret will at best get two kills. That’s all.

I don’t think it’s actually because the Turret is weak. I really think the issue comes from me. So tell me : how do I use the turret decently ? Right now I use it to flank, protect my butt (and my team’s butt by the same way) or area denial. But I really feel like I am actually not denying a lot of areas. Maybe I am not positioning it right.

Well, I’m a pubscrub buutt… I usually put it behind a corner or to protect objects to provide extra firepower/ defend objectives.
For example, I shared couple turret spots with one random community some time ago (last fall or something) and one guy tried out one spot

The praying mantis could use that kind of knowledge too i have a loadout with lock on and steady for beefed up turret but i never know where to place them

Place your turret in areas the enemy is likely to rush blindly but place it in a way that when the enemy comes the turret will shoot at their backs, an example of this is on the truck, behind the bus at the last point in Chapel.

When playing offensively, get the flank and place the turret behind the enemy and stay with the turret and attack the same enemy.

Ok a few pointers. The role of the turret is:

  1. warning system
  2. delay
  3. distraction
  4. additional damage

Never expect the turret to handle an enemy on its own especialy not without lock on.
However you will get hit indicators and turret firing sounds when the turret is shooting. look out for that and use that as an ability to know when someone goes through a flankroute or is near the objective.

Always attack with the turret, the turret doesn’t survive many shots/explosives. best is to stand a few meters beside it so the enemy has to make a decision between you and the turret. you might die but than its fairly certain that the turret will clean up.

As for turret placement, general keep in mind that the turret has a certain detector range and angle so make sure that it can’t be seen by the enemy before they are in that range, likewise keep flanking positions in mind. Also always keep an eye out for other bushwhackers and where they place their turrets might learn some good placement that way.

Lastly never forget that you can pick up your turret, to reduce the cooldown. This is also the reason why the turret stands there smoking for a second before it is destroyed the hitbox is pretty wonky but if you are close you might be able to salvage it and reduce what would have been a 20+ cooldown to a 4 second one.

It’s best used as a trap and off to the side rather than a direct defense, but of you keep a turret off to the side where enemies will go through in a place where it’ll have good coverage after spotting them, especially with lock on it can be great.

The secret is to be an a$$ hole, if it seems like an annoying and unexpected place to have a turret, do it.

I agree >:3

Put it in a place where your team mates will also be. In a 1v1 fight your turret will almost always lose. But people for whatever reason never aim for a turret when there are other people to shoot at.

Honestly, just have zero expectation of what it’s meant to do. Then never stop playing Bushwacker.

i used to think he was terribly underpowered, but now he’s my favourite engineer. Proxy is disgusting, and Fletcher is also disgusting.

Also learn to parkour. If something looks climbable, try it. Chapel especially, favourite Bushwacker map by far.

(PleasantWheat) #11

Pretty much all the tips for it have been said already but i figured I would chuck my 2 cents in. On defense try to chuck the turret in a spot that can set up a cross fire, so no matter where the enemy comes from, in an ideal situation, they will be getting shot by you and the turret from 2 different angles. Same deal with offence once you get into a good position. You can also use the turret as a makeshift shield whilst planting which has saved my ass on numerous occasions.

My recipe: bait and distract enemies to maximize turret damage. For instance, when you fancy agressive defense on the last stage of Chapel (situational), go to the passage behind the generator and camp the stairs with turret placed on the containers to your right (simple walljump to get there). When you engage and retreat, enemy is likely to chase, exposing his back to your faithful drone.

Placing it on the railing above the generator in Bridge (second objective barrier) always works fine - somehow people don’t expect the turret up there. As for how you actually place it on the railing… well, I will let you figure that out yourself.

The turret is really only useful on defence, and limited to certain maps, and their certain sections (for optimal use). The best way to use it, to me, is to use it in what i’d call a “bait and switch” setup. By this I mean let the turret initiate an engagement. When you hear this, peek out and hit the distracted enemy from behind before he can kill off your sentry. This can easily net you 3 kills before the sentry is destroyed. What may also happen is that a second enemy may get originally distracted by you killing his teammate, and lock his vision on killing you. In this situation, you can simply hide and let your turret hit him down, and then re-peek when he is low.

Hope this helped.

I just tend to place it into spots that make it not super easy to kill and not expected and where I can draw people in from one angle by shooting or hiding and let it do it’s work to finish. It can also be used effectively if you take damage and you know somebody will chase. It easily evens out the HP pool if they try to shoot it first and eat the damage.

I have some issues with turret placement though as it can be hard which makes it worse than it actually is. If you’re other ability button allowed you to interact with it and turn it anyway you wanted it would be incredibly more versatile on a lot more maps/map areas.

(vdll) #16

This! Let us turn the ufcking turret!

(Szakalot) #17

good advice overall, one tip is missing: hiding behind the turret can have it soak up significant amount of damage that would otherwise hit you. even spam, provided it hits the front of the turret

(Gi.Am) #18

But but than your beautyful turret is gone, I rather sacrifice myself and stand infornt of it

Pffft play arty or kira more often. Placing turrets (especialy under stress) is a breeze in comparsion  .

I think the rotating feature was shutdown specificaly to have the turret a little bit away from walls and therefore always enough space for someone to get behind it, and to have it a little bit more exposed in general. I think there was talk that they would have to reduce the survivability of the turret further to compensate (personaly I wouldn’t wanna see that turret is already pretty weak making the augments almost a must).

(Naonna) #19

Blind corners or places which are already being covered by your team work wonders. Leaving a turret alone or in an open area where it can be shot from outside its range isn’t a good idea. - Alternatively, have teammates around to keep your turret safe. Treat it like a stationary merc who is unable to heal.

(kopyright) #20

Also, if you absolutely cannot find a spot where the turret can deal significant amounts of damage, you can still use it as an alert of sorts. Just keep an eye on the ability label of your HUD - if the small circle turns from full white to white circle somebody just destroyed your turret and you know they are coming.

A good place to use this is the gun nest on Trainyard. If you keep your turret pointed at the hallway the attackers can rush through you can get behind the gun without having to worry about getting surprised from the right. Just remember to GTFO once you hear your turret’s sound.
