How do I import RtCW maps?

(Resolute) #1

Let me be frank, Im just one guy… on university holidays, and I don’t really have the time (or the skill) to make maps from scratch. Also, in terms of clan competition, some of the original RtCW maps are among the best I’ve seen.

Firstly, all the original RtCW maps are in .bsp format. Is this a direct translation of .map stuff? I noticed that the pak file has a .map version of base which can be opened in ET GTK radiant quite well, but with a few textures missing. So, is there a way to convert .bsp to .map?

Secondly, who made the maps for RtCW? Was it activision, or nerve? or both? And how would I go about asking them for permission if I was to try tinker around with thier maps for ET usage? If I did do this, I could take no credit for the map anyway, as any work I did on the map would probably be less than 1% anyway.

Oh well, this is making me lose sleep at night… I want to tinker with mp_beach for ET

Getting Activision/Nerve to agree is as likely as me winning the lottery meh thinks

Simple answer:
You don’t.

Longer answer
There are some tools which decompile .bsps, but the result isn’t terribly useful. The texturing is all lost, and the brushwork can be messed up.

The source .map is available for a couple of the original RTCW maps. mp_beach comes with the RTCW tools and mp_base is in one of the .pk3 files. However, importing them into another game is a clear violoation of the EULA. Probably the clearest statement in the ‘permitted new creations’ section is that the new creations should work only with the original game.

I suspect activision would be the ones you ask for permission, but I give 100:1 odds that the answer is No.

If you wanted to create a map which merely looked like one of the original RTCW maps, without using any of the original brushwork, that would almost certainly be fine. However, it would be just about as much work as creating a new map from scratch.

The .map files for some RTCW customs are available. You might have better luck convincing those authors to let you convert their maps to ET.

Thanks guys, and sorry for re-asking an old question  Didnt see it already addressed on the first page.

This is a real pity, I have to take my hate off to the original RtCW mapping team, they made the best maps for clan play. As to splash damage, they make high quality maps… in fact the best I’ve seen, but while they look amazing, quite often they aren’t properly suited to competition play.

Take gold rush, or fuel dump for example. The defenders spawn right next to the objective they have to defend, but the attackers have to run across half the map (especially in fuel dump) making it near impossible to maintain any sustained offence.

Oops, got a bit off track there
