How did you get into online FPS games?

(mouse) #21

Lol, for me it was the same path as [!]Icon, but then without BF42 and UTK3  So Q3-UT-RTCW-ET

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #22

I started with an acorn, i just played them games, we got a windows PC and i played doom 2 on it, my antie got married and her new husband gave me half life to play, i did the HL sereies, then my brother got me into couter-strike, i really sucked, my new uncle then told me about RTCW, i played it and i was hooked, i then just followed the patches and that led me right to ET

just makes you think how much computers have developed these days, since the days that they would take up your entire office

(Ifurita) #23

Started with the occassional game of Doom, while at Business School, but started playing Quake 2, then 3. That started me down on the crooked path of scripting, guides, and tutorials. Somewhere along the way, I stumbled into RTCW, then was invited to beta test ET. I’m still here to bother everyone today.

welll i got a pc when i was reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal young… with castle wolfenstein 3d   i was totally addicted… After that i got doom , and from that day i play lots of fps

Im also addicted to strategy C&C series and warcraft… { to bad EA killed westwood :frowning: }

Oh… and the online fps… Well…

I Didnt really do online Fps games since i had a crappy 56k modem… wich was pretty good for strategy games though… But i have a 2mbit line now for like 5 years so i been doin lots of fps online gaming for 5 years… Years be4 that were mainly strategy games because a 200 ping in fps games is a killer…

(BondyBoy007) #25

yeah I forgot about Castle Wolfenstein, I had a demo of it on my Amiga and I was totally blown away by the 3D, even if 2 thirds of the screen was taken up with black borders - never played it multiplayer though

(bubba g) #26

First computer was a ZX81  - and have been playing games ever since (ahhh… 3D monster maze on the 81…). Got into online games through Q2 & Duke Nukem on a mates PC, whose dad ran an architects, so we got to use their super-fast ISDN connection…

This lead to UT, then RTCW & UT2K3. Now it’s mainly ET with a spot of either RTCW or UT2K4 once in a while

Of course their was also the atari game console with pong…

(BlackDeath) #27

What about the SD crew? Interested in hearing their gaming stories

started FPSs with Catacomb Abyss then a little castle wolfenstein, doom, doom2, dukenukem3d, quake. Played doom + later ones on lan (after hours on the CAD workstations at school :D) and serial a bit.

Took a bit of a break…

First really got into online stuff with Mechwarrior 4 (not really an FPS) and RTCW. A bit of tribes, unreal and a few other things thrown in too.

  • hmm, had a C64. vaguely remember some 3d maze there…
  • 486 PC w Doom, and Wolfenstein 3d
  • Played “Murder Death Kill” on a Mac in Uni. was fun
  • Got really bored with SP games after playing some 3d Ninja thing and some adventure-like game to much on a P133.

Got a 900Mhz AMD Athlon and got broadband as fast as I could to use multimedia online.

  • Went through Blueshift and some other CS SP thing.

Had some time to kill and browsed to FilePlanet to dl just any demo , ET was high on top DL list… OMG!

So incredibly more fun to play in teams with other ppl and to try to outsmart the other team. -> played for ages and then tried RTCW SP, Call of Duty, BF1942, and some others… tha FarCry demo also.

Really liked CoD as an extension of watching a WW2 movie and RTCW SP for the (infantile but still  ) storyline and humour. Rented “enemy at the gates” on DVD after playing CoD. Don’t really like zombies and aliens or having to learn som bogus spell list etc. I like to use real world reasoning to win in game. (eg artillery first, secure key points with heavy weapons, move in…)

Learned scripting but was somewhat disappointed. Would be nice with more professional map editing environment and having ie the BASIC syntax available for scripting purposes.

Tried Anarchy Online MMOG to see if I could get what I lacked in ET (SP objective like missions for multiple players) and liked the big world, the character building, the travel and the market economy but the fighting is such a joke…purlely “skill based”. I can’t believe the ppl playing AO try to be macho about beeing a good fighter :). In the end I think AO is a really extended chatroom w graphics on top of it and they have to move beyond that to make it more exciting.

In the end AO having a monthly subscription fee, really poor graphics and lousy/ boring fighting made me not renew it.

In ET I wish it was easier to cooperate and I want more world manipulation/ physics.

Wishlist:
(nice physics+ dynamic lighting + far distance viewing + SP like missions for multiple players somehow + better cooperation support )

Want something like a HL2 engine game w no zombies and aliens and without that silly “pick up things with a beam” - thing.

A friend of mine sent me Quake I. I played DM for some weeks then someone told me about QWTF, and I was hooked. This lasted for some 3 years until a friend of mine from Porto sent me some screenshots of this game called RtCW. I had a P200 MMX back then so I really couldn’t play rtcw, but I got a new computer just in order to be able to play  Been addicted ever since :stuck_out_tongue:

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #31

should i see if ET works on my acorn? im gona fry the fucker

(puubert) #32

My mate had an N64 and we would play 4 player goldeneye non-stop (until they got fed up of me winning all the time).

Damn that game ruled. A friend of mine owned it, and we’d play for hours. Every gathering at his house we’d get good and drunk and go and shoot each other. Awesome.

(ildon) #33

I started out playing Doom2 over the modem with my friend in grade school. Unfortunately when Quake came out it took up too much bandwidth for our 14.4 modems to handle in a direct connection. So I stuck to downloading single player mods and playing by myself, and playing Warcraft2 over Kali and getting my ass kicked. Another friend of mine got a laptop and we played Quake and War2 over the serial port for a while, until I got cable. By then QuakeWorld was out, and I played Future Vs. Fantasy Quake for a while, and eventually moved to Team Fortress. I played this religiously until Half-Life came out, and then I played TFC for about a year, and then moved back to QWTF, and eventually started playing Q3F. I played RTCW for a few months in a clan, but eventually it was too distracting from my school work so I quit. I went back to Q3F that summer, and ended up playing that right up until ET came out. I also tried BF1942 with my Q3F clan but I didn’t like that game.

Note that all the while I also played pretty much any other game or mod that came out. I played CS on pubs off and on from beta1-beta7, usually only if one of my friends invited me to play though. I played ra3 and capturestrike. Long ago I used to play a little Quake2 Freeze Tag.

So in answer to your question: Yes I have no life.

Edit: anyone else remember yelling at your family not to answer the phone? :moo:
Edit2: I guess you could say I was always the person over whose shoulder was being looked. I taught all my friends to play QWTF, taught them all to play TFC, taught them all to play Q3F, and attempted to convert them to ET but it didn’t take for most of them. :frowning:

My first FPS game was Wolfenstein 3D, in 1992-3 ?? But I think Ultima Underworld was the first 3D game that came out. Blake Stone came out, but my 386 was too slow for floor and ceiling textures… Ive been always addicted to videogames, then Doom came out, and I couldnt believe my eyes! Best graphics ive ever seen! Doom was my first online game, playing it 1 on 1 with my 14400 Modem connection.

(Sauron|EFG) #35

First online FPS was RtCW. Stumbled on the demo by accident and got hooked.

([!]Icon) #36

i think UT is the first online game i ever competed in. i knew of cometition in Quake3 and all, but i was too young to really grap how big it was. then by the time UT rolled around i knew all abotu competition and ladders. The worlds top UT2k3 players lives not to far from me, so we have a pretty huge UT fanbase here. was even in a few local competitions. but never really went anywhere with it, got bored of the game, and before i knew it i was into RTCW.

(evilsock) #37

heh, I started with a ZX81 too  (1K - had to wait until Xmas for the Memtech 16K Ram Pack :O) - played 3d monster maze also - there was a company called ‘Software Farm’ that actually managed to get high-res graphics out of it! I remember almost wetting my pants at the Psion loader screen that you got free with the ZX Speccy too - real colour…

First MP game was Doom on a college network (Netware 3.11) - was a total Doom Head (had played the original Wolf3D also) - if you had a pc with a sound card you were a god tbh and even then it was prolly an 8bit SB card

Played Quake to death in SP, still get it out sometimes but not in it’s original form, I use QMBQuake - the enginer is more modern) - tried playing online, but had a sucky 14.4 connection and no 3d card so it was like QW with a software renderer for a long long time

Tried to play Q2 without a 3dfx card but it sucked hard tbh, and if fact was the main reason I dropped off and didn’t really get excited about MP 'till Goldeneye came out.

Missed the Beach demo but bought RtCW anyway then heard about the MP side - tbh it was like night and day. What had always naffed me off about online gaming was that it was very much to do with the speed of your connection (although as we all know you can compensate, it’s wether you can be arsed when your playing against someone with a ping that’s 300ms faster) - where Quake x.xx had always bee fast and furious and to the point, RtCW had the teamplay element which made the difference - got totally and hopelessly hooked, even on a 56k modem.

Stuck with it from start to finish (and find myself playing the 1.1 servers just for the improved ping) - ET was a different kettle of fish. Whilst I knew of SD from Tram Siege (a personal fave) the SD boys have a thing for big maps which kind of killed things for me on 56k. I could still play against RtCW 1.41 clanned BB guys and do ok but with ET it was so much harder - my ping was often all over the place, but I had fun and lots of it - it didn’t stop me playing it to death though tbh, and came across alot of ex-RtCW players who cut me some slack with the high ping (ie didn’t kick me off their servers)/

As for n00bs, well it’s my guess that the next wave of consoles is where they’re at tbh - plug and play, nice and easy - different breed of person. They are the ‘hifi’ set who see online gaming as the next essential fashion thing (think Tekken / PSX, that crowd) so I see the future of MP gaming as being an extension of that.

The future is maybe where we see what previously might have been an SP game on your PC become a server side game that you connect to as a client - more interactive. The games that we play (RtCW / ET) are of a kind and attract a certain kind of person imho, just look around you here on these boards and we’re all a bit techy / geeky - no prob with that, but like I said it not where the monies at tbh.

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #38

oh wait i get it

my first online FPS game was CS, uncle gave me RTCW and folowed that to ET

(BondyBoy007) #39

This is ever so slightly off topic but as we all seem to be talking about zx81’s and the good ol days then I thought this may bring back a few memories:-

http://www2.b3ta.com/heyhey16k/

certainly does for me

(eq-Shrike) #40

Had various computers and 1 console as a wee Shrikie - Atari VCS,speccie,C64,Atari ST,Amiga …

Then got into PC’s with my DX2-66. Played mainly Doom and Rise of the Triads (cant remember if that is the right title).

First played vs a human opponent by linking two PC’s via serial cable and playing DOOMII and Heretic.

Played online first with a MMORPG called Meridian 59 before becoming ensared by QWTF. Tried some Q2 and Q3 but marriage/kiddies slowed my online career down somewhat.

Got back into MP games with RTCW and ultimately ET
