Hosting error and Texture Query - Solved!

2 quick things i hope:

  1. if a texture isnt showing on my map when a mate plays it on his pc, do i just have to find the texture, copy it into a textures folder and include it in my pk3? if not what must i do?

  2. ive built a med cabinet, and ever since then, ET crashes when i try to host it. Do i need to include scripting for said med cabinet? If you need to see how i made it, see this thread:

1.) Yes, if areas are orange / black then a texture is missing.
Here’s a short tutorial by Ifurita:
http://planetwolfenstein.com/4newbies/pakscape.htm

2.) No, you don’t have to maks scripts for an ammo / health cabinet.
May be you have to much “.pk3” in your etmain folder.

Too much pk3? what that mean and how so? If you dont mind explaining

I don’t know the numbers but I do know that at some point, if you have too many PK3, after a said given number, the rest are ignored or something similar.

When making maps, there’s some basic things you should keep in mind. First, using other people’s textures without their permission is highly frowned upon. By keeping all custom pk3 in your devel environment, will give you access to those images. The way I work, and I know lots of other mappers do the same, is to copy your ET installation to another dir and remove all the irrelevant PK3. That means you should only have 5 PK3. Those being: common.pk3, lights.pk3, mapmedia.pk3, pak0.pk3 and pak1.pk3. Pak1.pk3 being the last ET bugfix. That way, only textures and models, etc that came with ET can be used. Also a good idea is to unpak the texures, models and relevant parts of pak0.pak so most of those are easily accessible.

I had the ‘too-many-pk3’s’ problem the other day. I connected to server which was running a large rotation of custom maps. The next day, the maps I was working on in radiant failed to load, in fact, nothing would load at all (I knew they should as I hadn’t made any changes to them). It’s not so much that after a said number the rest are ignored… but more like ET has problems loading anything at all. The symptom I received from it was in the loading screen with the white bar going across in the bottom right of the screen (you know, where the map introdutory text is). It nearly completed the bar it was on, jumped to a slightly brighter white (or bolder white?), then went back to about 1/4 to a 1/5 of the bar complete. Then you have to wait for it to complete the bar again, and then it would do the same thing. This happens over and over.
All I did to cure it was to create a folder in etmain and move some of the pk3’s in there. However be careful to keep the ones MadJack mentioned above.

Sorry, Jack, i wasnt aware of said texture copyrighting (heh) and such! Ive not used any textures that dont come inside radiant…so surely these textures have been ok’d :S for commercial (maybe a bad word) use?

Ummm, I think radiant displays every texture from pk3 files (including the custom maps that you have downloaded)… Maybe it’s better to do what MadJack suggested.

There’s always the option of getting permission for those custom textures that you have used if you have indeed used any…

Any textures that come with ET are acceptable but NOTHING from ET can be commercially used. You can only use those with ET or something closely related to ET like a mod exemple. As for anything NOT coming with the default installation, it’s badly regarded to use those without the owner’s permission. Usually a simple link in the readme.txt will suffice. Give the authors credit and you shouldn’t have any problems. Just ask.

I just reread your post and I’m wondering about the med cabinet. Do you mean you’ve made a med cabinet out of brushes, as in furnishing or whatever, or simply that you made a misc_cabinet_health and it doesn’t work? If it’s the latter, please include the error msg you got.

Ok, its sorted now, it was one of the pk3 we were using. Ill either change textures then or ask permission, thanks for letting me know about this.
