Horribly disappointed (pc)

I do not know what to place the blame on. Is this a case of poor optimization? Rush to market? Console port? I cannot believe, especially after all the hype, how **** the movement in this game is.

I have a relatively new system - core i7 950, 6gb ddr3 corsair dominator, vertex 2 SSD, EVGA 470gtx superclocked. I get a solid 80 fps, but the movement feels like I am running through tar. Also, WTF is up with the “SMART” movement? It is nowhere near as fluid as shown in the videos. I cannot even go into a crouch without sliding across the floor like a goddamn jackass.

tl;dr: SPLASHDAMAGE. FIX IT NOW. WE DESERVE BETTER FOR OUR MONEY.

(indirect) #2

This game is clearly not a console port…

(bubut) #3

Oh really? Then why do all of the “get smart” videos reference the D-pad?

(Lomaso) #4

Because they were done on a PC with a xbox 360 controller?

(stealth6) #5

Sounds like you’re just having a hard time adjusting to a new game

(Herandar) #6

If you want to crouch instead of sliding, you should stop running first.

(indirect) #7

holy lmfao

(TheBIG_Lebowski) #8

HAHAHAHAHA this is your answer. Stop playing like its COD and start playing like its Brink. All is well when you play the game the way its made. Not the way you want to play. Also character movement is based on what body type you are too.

(Shadedluck) #9

What he said. And if you want to move faster, use the light body.(Assuming you played this enough to be level 7)

(BJBlaskowitz) #10

I believe it is. I initially wasn’t interested when I heard about it 2 yrs ago, despite having good experience with SPlash Damage in ET/RTCW, but when I heard it was dev. for console, I took it off my radar til recently. The whole SMART thing seemed built for console. Most PC guys have no issues with moving in FPS. It’s just a fact that most games are ports now. Some better than others. Wolfenstein (2010) was a horrible port. MW2/BO had issues in the beginning. Just look in the config files and you will see the leftover Xbox code lines.

That said this game is really intended to be played on a PC IMO, but I understand the economics of porting, since PC is a relatively small market now.

(master[mind]) #11

Console ports can’t use ~ to pull down the console and “set cvar r_useHBAO 0”. Movement is fine. Aiming is clearly idTech4 feel, direct.

+1 on this

have a tapir and a koekje

(Statement) #13

No problems here, i5 2500k stock, gtx460 1gb 8gig 2000mhz ram, getting 150-200 fps on default settings, gets as low as 80 if I turn on all the eye candy.

I just spent 5 hours with the PC version and, well, yeah, I want my 50 dollars back.

First off the technical incompetence is challenging to overlook, with audio bugs killing much of the sound in most games I play, at some point or another all I can hear is ambient sounds or can no longer hear gun shots etc. Also the FPS drops to single digits or even lower every time I search for servers, making the simple process of scrolling down and clicking a server an experience of agony. Movement glitches, I find myself getting stuck in place after using a command station, floating around like a zombie when the lock-on mechanic kicks in when I’m trying to heal someone, like moving past them or around them in a semi-circle before actually healing them. The AI might be the worst I’ve ever seen in a video game, I haven’t played every game so I don’t know if it’s actually the worst but from my experiences with shooters it’s certainly the worst. There are only eight maps, and more will surely come at a premium. The challenges are bland and either way too easy to be fun or way too frustrating to be worth it. The game runs like hell whenever I play with other people, but then again it’s only somewhat worse than bot matches. The controls are clunky and weirdly sluggish for the emphasis on platforming mechanics that don’t add as much as they could, especially if you’re a heavy. The controls feel convoluted with one too many radial menus, which gives a strong impression of an XBox as the native platform, or a “PC with an Xbox controller” if you prefer to be delusional. The level design and presentation also reminds me of Kill Zone more than Quake Wars, and Kill Zone is a game I’d probably pay not to play. Even if the game was a technical masterwork it would still feel like a perpetual mess of combat and visual information, which I know some of you love but that just doesn’t fly when I’ve spent the last 4 years playing Team Fortress 2 where everything can be happening at once and not be overwhelming and confusing, to the mind or eye. I can tell some of you guys are dedicated to the point that an honest take isn’t going to change a thing, but if this games doesn’t get patched big time I can’t help but go on associating Slash Damage with questionable work.

To the OP. Change your FOV, it’s set ridiculously low (70) by default and makes it feel like you are indeed running through tar.

There’s this thing that we invented recently, just for BRINK, called the “PARAGRAPH” system. It stands for “Please Add Readability Adjustments, Gratuitous Reading is Actually Ph***ing Hard.” It’s this thing where you put white space between your text and it makes you look less like a moron, and people can more easily read your message, which they will now also be assuming might be correct due to being written by a not-moron.

(xartion) #17

It’s interesting indeed how the guy you’re quoting posted one of the most eloquent and reasonable criticisms of this game, yet all you can do is dismiss it on formatting grounds. These forums really do show who has a dog in this fight, and quite frankly, your post is really sad.

(Je T´aime) #18

I agree with him on the fps part, they´r bad i have liike 10 fps on brink and run crysis2 with all settings maxed just fine lol, and Linsolv u sux, hes beyng honest in that post so why the flames…
