Hint and hintskip brushes disappearing

(FrostyChilli) #1

Hey!

I have countered an error in GtkRadiant version 1.6.4 - Dec 13 2013

Whenever I make a brush and try to add either “hint”, “hintskip” or “subtlehint” textures to every side of the brush(6 sides) the brush disappears. It doesn’t matter, which side is which. It could be the way that right and bottom sides are “hint”, front and top are “hintskip” and the rest are “subtlehint”. Or all “hint”. Or 1 “hint” and rest “hintskip”. Either way after that the block disappears. And if I should now deselect my faces or my brush, the block is gone. Nowhere to be found. Only way to get it back is by “Ctrl+Z”.
However the usual “skip” texture does not seem to affect it. So if I add “skip” to 5 sides and “hint” to one side, the block does not disappear.

Has anyone else come across this bug? Is it a bug?

Frosty

You might have disabled displaying of hints…

Like ailmanki says, you might have accidentally made something invisible. In the menu, click “View” and check.

Also, when the brushes do not look normal to me, I just press “J”, repeatedly. Hope it helps.

Hello,

I can’t offer you any other info on your problem, as the only reason for this to happen (which I know of) has been posted.

However I would like to adress another issue. I don’t know anything about the layout of your map, but the placement of that hintbrush looks a little off to me.
I assume you are going to place it inside the doorframe? This is generally fine, like described here, however for that purpose I suggest to have a look at areaportals, since that would keep the inside not-rendered as long as the door is kept close.

If this is a simple, small hut in a bigger valley, like for example both allied huts in fueldump, then I would suggest to not place a hint-brush at all and also keep the whole hut detailed. Also if your hut contains windows or any other openings to other sides, which would allow the player to ‘look’ inside then also keep your whole hut detailed!

Nevertheless if this door will block off a larger area, then you should use an areaportal combined with a door. (Side-note: For this to work you can’t have any windows next to it!)

EDIT: Also it is generally better to not place hint brushes directly in the doors/windows, but rather in the hallway/room behind. Have a look at the tutorials posted here.
