High Level Play Testing

(ZaF) #1

Would splash damage comment on whether or not they would be willing to let top teams from RTCW / ET test the games competative side?

For example, once in beta, could we start playing a few beta clan matches to test out balance issues at high level play? as we all know there is a difference between balance in public servers and balance in high level clan play.

they already have a fix for comp balance - it’s called server options. I have a feeling that letting top competitive clans playtest the game, they would ultimately want to change everything Brink is about, and just have it as stripped down, barebones mod for competition.

You want comp balance? wait for a pro mod to be released. Chances are, competitions will use something similar in their matches anyway.

I really agree to this, I don’t think you should let some top guys play the game because a lot of players only play it for fun. Apart from that - sd has a perfect development team that feel some things to!

A side from this, as an extra reply:
I really think the server options must be moddable to the deepest, so people don’t need to make mods like promod in call of duty 4, but that’s it already directly available.

Also some notes of main targets must be visible in the server browser, so you directly know which server it is where you’re dealing with before you connect!

i think you should ask some high skilled teams to help with fine tuning game balance because there will most likely be balance issues that only really show up in high level play. the same issues exist in “fun level” play but aren’t as easily noticeable when teamplay/movement isn’t as fast and coordinated and luck plays a big part in aim. fixing them makes the game play better(=more fun) on all skill levels.

for example, you might find a set of relative damage outputs for the gun/upgrades combinations that is fun to play with for the “fun level” testers, but aren’t set exactly right making some combinations progressively weaker and some combinations progressively stronger compared to some other combinations as the skill level of the players increases. hoping that someone eventually comes up with a “promod” with tweaked guns that the community is happy with instead doing the balancing thing as well as possible before release might be a bad idea. like in the case of the guns in quake live, it took id a long time to find a balance people didn’t have a valid reason to complain about. that’s the way i see it anyway.

oh, and i think ZaF and whoever he plays with nowadays would be good choice for beta tester!

The last thing I want to see is a bunch of self proclaimed experts on gaming ( the 2% of players that think 4 v 4 Arena death match is the only way to play) have any input before the game is released

(BioSnark) #6

^ I would hit the “agree/thx” button if it existed cough

(brbrbr) #7

SD/ZM decide about [unwiling of]that, year ago.
so what point in discussing impossible things ?
just keep patience and wait for 2010 fall and Brink the game© tm release/sales.

(Senethro) #8

So people who are good at something can’t have useful opinions at something?

(Paul) #9

They can, but they should do it with the same way the rest of the players will. It’s ridiculous to give them a beta to test it and still change things…

(DarkangelUK) #10

Skewed selfish opinions.

Just 'cause the vocal minority of a minority are idiotic doesn’t mean the silent majority of that minority are the same…

On side note, I’ve only ever seen white swans so it stands to reason that all swans are white.

(Nail) #12

sure they can, about 4 v 4 death match, unfortunately this is 8 v8 objective so their contribution is rendered pretty meaningless

(INF3RN0) #13

I don’t think that being a comp player will make you any better at testing than others… I just hope the game is being tested with an open mind to things. Anything else will most likely be patch material. Kudos for trying

Well it’s the vocal ones giving the feedback, the silent aren’t going to help anything…

People hearing this from me will know it sounds crazy lol but anyway, I’m all for compeittion but the last time SD let clans beta test they just saw it as an early release and used it as an opportunity to create strategies and tactics before anyone else with no feedback.

Give us the SDK quickly and promod will be out quickly and should be good enough.

Just my view of your reply, but this more or less looks like “what ever you make won’t be good enough SD, just let us do it ourselves and don’t bother trying”. Quite offensive sounding.

(Nail) #17

It’s not just your opinion Dark, I find it highly annoying as well

(.Chris.) #18

I wasn’t referring to feedback

(shirosae) #19

It’s not that hard to understand?

Jamieson is saying that clans abused the beta with ETQW, so SD might as well not worry about it and just give them the SDK asap to do whatever butchery they want instead of trying to please the unpleasable clan players.

tl;dr: He’s agreeing with you.

While I understand both points of view, coming from a gaming league, I think beta testing which includes experienced comp players is a helpful thing both to the development team and the leagues which will be supporting it.

Team Warfare League is in serious discussions to open leagues, ladders and a tournament for Brink upon release. Having access to the game before release can help to tailor those things for the best possible player experience which grows the competitive community and drives both the acceptance and longevity of Brink in the marketplace.
