High detail overlay

(Tigris) #1

Sorry if I bother you with this, but how can you exactly do this-

And what is it? It’s the basic texture, but it’s neither a second texture simply overlaying the first one, or is it? Must be some kind of patchmesh then.

EDIT: Another question just crossing my mind- if this is really some perhaps the texture-projecting trick- does it generate a dynamic shader (like style-lights) or is it a static one?

In this example would it remain the same on the func_rotating or would it really cast a shadow in relation to the angle the fan is currently looking.

(system) #2

Maybe it’s something with the lightfilter-stuff??

But it looked more like a decal.
I’m sure ydnar will tell us this little secret soon.

(wudan) #3

Looks like alphashadow with some keen sampling and scaling. You could ask whoever made those pics what the values were.

(Tigris) #4

Ok, will do…
-> YDNAR, honey? :wink:
Fiesling, thought so at first too, but those DM17 shots look a bit too detailed for that. When doing it like you did in the tutorial they start to blur too soo. See the details fading in your shot and then look at the DM17 shots, they are still very clear. Is it perhaps a edited lightmap?

Edit: The thing is that these pics are already some time on the page, so it seems that it must be something y is already toying around with for quite some time.

(wudan) #5

I think I was wrong, those things are TOO sharp. Maybe somebody used map scaling?

(system) #6

I think it’s so sharp because it uses bump-mapping is is a bit overbright.

maybe it has something to do with this shot.

I still think its a shader and has nothing to do with the lightmap.

btw: i used an old q3map2 for the tutorial and compile-options were not perfect.

(Tigris) #7

Yeah, yours looked good, but these are awesome

(system) #8

it’s not mine. its form the shaderlab shot-library.

(Tigris) #9

The church-style window? I saw that one on your tutorial when I looked for these in the first place

(system) #10

lol yes thats mine. I thought you mean the deluxemap shot.

(Emon) #11

They are decals of some sort. And what are deluxemaps? Something new in the next release?

(system) #12

But the master question of this quiz is:

“Is the effect dynamic if the fan is in rotation?” :moo:

(ydnar) #13

The projected shadow on the fan is a shader trick I devised a few years ago. Yes, it rotates opposite the fan, giving the impression of a dynamic shadow.

The high-detail overlay shots are from a feature in a version forthcoming…

(wudan) #14

Just when I thought the well of goodness had just about run dry!

Is this the longest wait between releases, in Q3Map2 History? Has anyone written the history down?

(ydnar) #15

Version history is available in the readme file, at the bottom. There have been 100+ releases I think…

(Tigris) #16

Mind telling us how you did the shadow-trick? Would be intressted in seeing how you did it.

(U.S.S. Speed) #17

It’s pretty easy.

My incoming map is using massivly this trick to fake dynamic lighting.
Kind of Virtual Dynamic Lighting. (My map name is CTF_VDL  )

On the screenies above, I think it’s only a rotating decal.
