Hide / Eliminate Levels

Yes, higher level generally correlates to greater skill. But it’s not linear. You can only get so good. Beyond a certain point (~lvl 30 or so) level is nothing more than a quick-reference for someone’s time in game. Tons of FPS games don’t even use it because there’s no point. Honestly I don’t know why Dirty Bomb ever did include it since it has no interaction with loadouts or merc selection, or any aspect of gameplay really.

It was an improvement to see levels hidden in lobby as it keeps people from clearing out, or intentionally fleeing their team that has a couple newbies, soon as a high level player pokes their head in. Why not extend this anonymity into the rest of the gameplay?

Keep the xp meter and arsenal crate checkpoints. Arsenal crates are a fun reward and give xp a purpose and I don’t think any of us want to lose that.

Pros: Less complaining, less intentional stacking, less rage quitting, less grief. More focus on participating rather than hoping to get carried. Tidying up the game by dumping a system that serves no purpose.
Cons: I dunno. Loss of epeen?

Well fellow bombers? What are your thoughts on this?

I really don’t see it as much of an issue. I almost never see players switch due to levels, and whining about it seems rare.

I actually use it quite a bit, because it gives me a general idea of how experienced my team and the enemy team is, so I don’t have to just watch everyone over their shoulders.

In general, if I see a level 50 Vassili on the enemy team, I need to watch out. A level 5 Vassili, not as much.
On the other hand, if we have a level 50 Aura on my team, I won’t bother playing medic. But I might consider it if the Aura is level 5.

All in for removal of such arbitrary system as overall levels which tells practically nothing but time spent on the game.

What I would like to hear from people arguing levels are vague skill indicator for them (‘will this medic actually do their job’ etc.) how is exactly time played indicated on titles like Battlefield? Mind you, public game setting, not ranked or anything similar. Tf2 being heavily class based too, there is no straight visual indicator whatsoever, least when I was last around, who has played how long and how well. CS being hugely different on pub setting makes it not a prime example but that also lacks any proper indicator, afaik your matchmaking rank is not visible on public games with simply a glimpse to the scoreboard.

Coming back to DB why would we then need this? If one so badly wants to make pre-assumptions on whenever or not this player can perform their class role, before even seeing them actually play, why should we keep such a lackcluster system to show it? Why not come up with something better like merc specific levels which have a cap at somewhere, or somehow concretise the hidden PSR already present, crunching it down into verbal ranks etc.

I’ve been wonderfully surprised on so many sublvl10 players taking advices, having some idea what to do and actually trying their best even if it doesnt work out. Seen absolutely horrendous lvl40’s who dont even know about i.e. jump shootings massive accuracy loss. And I’m absolutely sick and tired of the plethora of times I have to start muting half the server due “omfg lvl90+ gg” and instant shufflevotes when I join the only populated min10 EU server early in morning. If I perfom, team won because levels and carry blabla jargon. If I suck like usual, I should kys, I should buy more skill, you name it. Completely needless, unwanted attention no matter what.

Levels as they are presented now do more harm than are useful. End of story. More suited system needs to be put in place somewhere along the line.

In the meantime you’ll see plenty of high skilled players sick of this shit making alt accounts and shattering spines as lvl7’s and what not, all while some people are glued on scoreboard hitting shuffle the moment they think their full sub10 team cant perform, even when match hasnt even started yet. Or actually those of you clinging into levels dont actually see it. Because hey a lvl7 cant be doing their class role well, right?

Replace it with Rage Quit Count… the more you rage quit, the more higher the level… that, I’d like to see.

cmm hides them!

(SaulWolfden) #6

There is no good reason to keep the levels being shown in a match, whatever benefits they may have are greatly outweighed by the negatives.

(pumpkinmeerkat) #7

soon, soon™, or before HL3?

(SnakekillerX) #8

This has been asked for countless times. I don’t know why they don’t implement it, or at least give you the option to hide it yourself.

Levels are just there for trolls and douches to complain about how someone else beat them because they are a high level, and therefore a no lifer.

This is already being done. When casual matchmaking gets put into the game it will also remove levels from the lobby and the in-game score screen. I honestly don’t know why SD didn’t already remove levels from the scoreboard when they removed them from the lobby screen.

but when i play ranked, instead of calling me lvl60 noob they call me 800h noob
soo its little pointless

i also like how on half of these threads you can just say “cmm”

sadly I don’t think that will help me in either case…

Many “high level” players can perform worse, because they have right to be rusty, especially after putting DB away for a long time. Yet these ignorant ones always expect them to be demi-gods…

(bontsa) #14

And don’t forget the ones who just want to play the fucking game for fun without some ignorant hold-my-hand lowlifes, expecting to get carried, whining through the entire match.

You don’t need to watch out if you see this level 70+ playing sniper. No wonder it feels people target me if I switch to sniper. I need to go play on a noob account. :worried:

That’s also what I use levels for as well.

there was a saying that people will always challenge the strongest no matter how futile their efforts are…

Drat, I honestly enjoy making people feel powerless when they see my level 70+ beautiful frame. Though I know for truth factors they’ll realize I’m just a level 70 scrub.

Will I be able to use anything in the future to boast about my awesomeness? I usually end every argument I have with someone below level 20 instantly in-game just by pointing out my level and saying “I think I know what I’m talking about.”

Tell them to look at your hours played in Steam if it comes to that. Or just avoid silly arguments like that in the future

Won’t be necessary when casual matchmaking is introduced and teams are composed entirely of similarly skilled players.

In theory.
