Lo all, I’ve been creating maps for TA and q3CTF for a few years… and I am looking forward to start with Enemy Territory, if I can manage all the info in the RTCW and ET manuals…
I will not ask one of the questions that can be found in the links… my question is a more theoretical one…
Do you think that a simetrical map would work in ET? Having the same buildings + objectives for both Allies and Axis? I know that the looks of the map would be more artificial; still, what about gameplay? Coming from CTFS playing and editing, simmetrical is one of my mottos!
It would on an LMS only map I guess, but if you varried textures, building and shapes, and had the same general paths I don’t think it would hurt much. This is all a matter of personal oppinion though, so you will get varried responses I’m sure.
I agree with MrPink in that it has a lot to do with personal taste. I traditionally have never liked symmetrical maps, but if you make one that is a blast to play, then who cares?!
‘Bridge’ was a symmetrical map for rtcw and everyone loved it… The primary reason for that though was cause it was a fun map to play and it cater to all types of play. Sure its possible to do it, and as already mentioned, if the gamers have fun playing it… then why not?
Hi phooka, finally been tempted over to the dark side of ET mapping then!
ET/RTCW maps are generally of the design/style of “assault” maps based on semi-realistic environments and slightly one-sided objectives. (ie. one team defends and one attacks) The only exception to the rule is dual objective maps where both teams attack and defend.
I’m sure symetrical maps layouts do exist and are foundly remembered by people but as a rule I would recommend the asymetrical approach if you are coming from a CTF background. But if the objectives and layout/choke points play well then ultimately the look and feel of the map becomes just window dressing. I would guess a large percentage of players really dont care about the look of the map and are more interested in game play.
Overall symetrical layout/looks would be best suited for dual objectives maps which I believe the community loves and is always on the lookout for.
