help with new pc

(Bestfinlandball) #1

So, my friend just recently ordered a new pc so i thought i could buy his old one. The thing is that i’m a noob at this, so what would be a fair price ?
Specs:
Intel® Core™ i5-4430S CPU @ 3.8GHz
1TB HDD
140GB SSD
12GB DDR3 RAM
Asus NVIDIA GeForce GT640 - 2GD3 3.0 Gb

It has been in moderate use for a couple of years.
I’d also like some upgrade suggestions.
Thanks in advance

@Amerika
Move to off-topic please ?

i5 from the 4th generation lineup of Intels still runs pretty well.
That graphics card is very outdated though. Can’t be worth more than $90.00
Not a bad processor.
And I would love an SSD -.-

I am no pricing expert, so I would just say to replace the 640 with something from either the 900 or 700 series. Those cards aren’t more than $300.00 depending on what you get.

If money isn’t really that big of a deal, would get another 4th gen processor. It doesn’t look like that processor benches so well compared to other CPUs in that price range.

Or if money REALLY isn’t a deal, go out and get a Z170 motherboard and treat yourself to DDR4 and Skylake processors ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

@N8o

Since i am by no means rich, i’d like to stay in the 200€ range
(maybe i’ll spend close to 300 but not much over)
Some cards that i noticed were

Gigabyte nvidia geforce gtx 660 2gb

Asus GeForce GTX 960 DirectCU2 OC Strix

And if i feel like spending

Asus Radeon R9 380X OC STRIX

I’ll take any constructive feedback like “it isn’t compatible” or “it isn’t that good”

Considering that it has been used moderately, but is still in perfect working order, a $185-$275 USD price point seems somewhat fair, a new i5 alone of that model is about $180. The specs for that ‘old’ system are actually not bad, and you don’t really need to change anything unless there is hardware failure. The price would be a lot higher w/ newer components but because ssd’s have limited write cycles, that works in your favor for a substantially cheaper price. My suggestion if you do decide to go with it, use an air compressor or dustoff or similar to clean out the insides of the computer, and possibly reapply thermal paste if you notice it running too hot. I’m glad you are getting an ssd w/ it if you decide to go through with the purchase, as it really is night and day if you’ve never used one before.

Really does depend what you’re using it for.

If you really like playing DB, invest into a good processor.

I’m a professional IT guy.

About 200-300€ max for you mate for that build.

Depending on PSU, you should change GPU. Maybe GTX960 or if money, 280x/970.
