Help Me Out (Small PC Upgrade)

(APRenpsy) #1

Currently I’m using this EVGA GeForce GTX 760, and am thinking about upgrading to a [url=“http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-turbogtx960oc4gd5”]Asus GeForce GTX 960, however here is the problem my CPU.

My Current CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K

It seems like games are starting to become CPU heavy once again nowadays, Star Citizen being a good example though that game is way ahead of everyone else in terms of power needed to run it.

The question here is would the power provided by this GPU upgrade be a big difference regardless of the CPU?

If not then I plan on waiting and getting a entirely new build later in life. The reason I can’t do it now is because I would need to get a completely new motherboard, power supply, etc to support a i7.

Current Build: Renpsy’s Build

nope, DB is very CPU dependent, wait till you can upgrade CPU

Well sheezzz :disappointed:

Any UE3 engine from what I understood is heavily CPU dependent so as @Nail said you should get a new CPU

I recently upgraded from a GTX 760, to a GTX 960.
My GPU is i5-4690k, and I have had no problems.
UE3 is CPU dependent, but a upgrade would not make a huge difference.

You could meet in the middle @APRenpsy

? How? I need a new motherboard if I even want to upgrade to i7.

Most Intel based Motherboards allow i3, i5 & i7 unless I am completely mistaken. My haswell board could take all of the above.

GPU will help you out in more GPU intensive games, but an i7 will help you out in games like Dirty Bomb/Arma/GTA etc…

Checked your motherboard on msi’s website and it can support i7’s!!! https://msi.com/product/motherboard/support/Z77A-G43.html#support-cpu

You could always overclock your cpu, that’s a K variant, and it should be able to get up to 4.0 ghz.

But I would also consider looking at the Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD Radeon 390, just save up a little extra and get more for your buck.

:open_mouth: That it! I totally forgot about overclocking I will give that a go

Ugh that took a while, but overclocked my cpu, we will see how it works out in-game.

Think of it this way, we aren’t in the 80 any more. Cpus dont do everything now, if its a graphic, the cpu doesnt even touch it. As of now, there isnt a modern cpu, that can handle modern games by its self.

I think your current graphics card is fine for the most part and is basically the same as mine, and upgrading that would be a waste atleast for now if you are on a budget. I use the Evga gtx 750ti FTW GDDR5 and it performs flawless for all my games including DB, GTAV, and CSGO, among others, but you might need to invest in a new cpu as others have indicated. Any Intel CPU post haswell will work wonders, I’m on the i5-4670 non k as i plan not to overclock it, although my motherboard https://us.msi.com/product/motherboard/Z87-GD65-GAMING.html#hero-overview has an automatic overclocker that will do that safely even for non k. I don’t have any lag or bottlenecks from DB as far as hardware goes, so definitely consider the CPU/ new motherboard if you have to.

You should definitely invest in an SSD for your OS in the future, 250 gigs should be ideal, and they are cheaper now. It will handle all your programs faster, better caching, and you will be able to start your computer up in seconds. It’s night and day man, I’ve built 2 computers with them and will never go back to a standard drive for the OS. You should still use your reg hard drive for your games, documents, and stuff at this point, but keep the os, microsoft office, and drivers on the ssd.

Almost forgot, I looked at your power supply, it’s not necessarily bad, but definitely go for one that has the 80+ standard like this one http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx600m as it will help on your utilities bill in the future.
