Helmsdeep nearly done (a few screenshots)

With the purchase of a nice new 21 inch monitor and the slacking of work somewhat, I am finding time to map again. Hurrah I hear you (probably) shout \o/

So here’s some progress shots on the way to a final version of Helmsdeep (MT is also progressing, but nothing worth screenshotting).

These are roughly how the caves will end up style-wise (note they are not fully blended nor do they have the glittering effect yet visible briefly in the previous version).
Colouring is fake, some photoshop stuff that actually looks grim, but at least shows the detail.
But what do you care? On with the show!

The weak tunnel area. A bit more cover, a bit more rocky ground.
Also the weak tunnel gate itself is missing, but it will be there I promise :slight_smile:

Looking down the tunnel from Axis cave spawn to the main cave. What’s that ahead? A split in routes? Why yes I think it is. Dunno what the corrupt crap in the bottom left is - please ignore.

Crystals everywhere. They provide cover, and are at least ‘in theme’. Some are pretty damn massive too!

You all know this area. 'Nuff said.

Crystals and rocks provide more cover in the main area. Top middle yellow grid reminds me which bits I haven’t textured yet :slight_smile:

What Axis must get past. Hopefully the cover will benefit Axis slightly more than Allies, but either way it’s not going to be just a straight shoot-out with MG42s any more.

Indeedy.
The plan is to finish off Helmsdeep (at a few small costs I might add - custom voice overs are not likely to be done now - too much work for too little return I’m afraid - bit of a shame but there you go).
Hopefully HD won’t take too long. I do do bits on MT as well as I get bored of caving, it’s just progress on MT doesn’t warrant any new screenshots really atm.

A few (1-2 at the most) small brushes here and there? To make the cave more organic. And a few digger-tools (pick, hammer etc)?
Otherwise: just incredible nice cave-system. I like the crystals. Well done!
Oh, I will own soo much down there. Can’t wait.

I’ve got a few ideas for the organic stuff yup.
Mining tools = possibilitiy.

I had to change the layout slightly of the route from Axis cave spawn to main cave, basically there’s a dog-leg in it going down and up some stairs to block vis. It only occurred to me as framerate dropped that you could see right from the main caves to Axis spawn (according to VIS anyway). Not friendly on the CPU or bandwidth!

That’s actually a very good idea. Get an old man to yell it and it will sound like that grey dude, gandalf.
(Why wasn’t there an ultimate fight between him and that evil wizard sauroman in the last film?! I cannot believe it. It would have been perfect, on that open field where all those dead “elephants” had fallen. Imagine the lines “Your reign stops here sauroman.” and the effects/wizardry powah in that fight!)

Errr Loffy, NO! Read the books to find out how Saruman really died - it’s much more fitting :slight_smile:
As for the sound effects, our resident map-modder Siliconslick has done exactly that. While I find it a bit OTT at times, I must admit I do find it funny when axis win and people type along to the winning dialog about man flesh :slight_smile:
Not to mention escorting the tank is a rather bizarre clip! Try his servers and see what you think.

As you can probably tell, the glitter effect on the walls is a lot more subtle than last time. Thankfully :slight_smile:

Im diggin those little mushroom patches too. It would be cool if some of the crystals had a glow effect where they get brighter for a second and then go dim, and just kept illiuminating and deilluminating like that the whole time. I hope it will still be possible to use the mortar effectively in the main cave leading up to the axis cave spawn, I mean I hope the big crystals don’t get in the way of that, I always loved bombing the crap out of the axis down there. Looks amazing Gerbil!

This is in the planning stage. I’d have started mapping but without finished helmsdeep I can’t justify another map on the go to spread my time even thinner!
