Hello SD .. Its Time for Some Changes

Confused and didn’t get what you meant by ‘increasing the curve’ after reading Smooth’s quote.

Learning what you’re up against just by looking at the character, so… learning every character’s ability and then being able to detect them just by looking at them and adjust your playstyle accordingly.

The feeling is it’s easier to learn a stable set of characters than it is to understand a system like Brink’s, where any enemy could be coming at you with a very wide variety of abilities, most of which you couldn’t see.

But when you didn’t know what you were up against, you had to just prepare for the worst. I think when individuality in each class becomes such an instrumental part of the game, the learning curve increases. I know people who still can’t tell the difference in classes in games like ET & Call of Duty, although they’re probably beyond saving now

How else would it work though other than just not having more than a few characters? MOBAs have around 100 champs that do completely different things on one hand and there’s not much in terms of informing you about what they all do unless you research it yourself. I think as long as you can identify the class by its looks you have a good idea of what it does. The characters aren’t that complex at the moment either and knowing what they specifically do isn’t always important. After all I think every game forces you to learn through experience, and in DB you can quickly identify special abilities anyway. The ‘learning curve’ for characters is already hugely minimal compared to everything else tbh.

MOBA games generally do have a much higher learning curve than FPS games so yes, the learning curve is already lower than the majority of games out there. My point is that people who play FPS and aren’t already part of SD’s established class-based shooters may feel overwhelmed by all the different things they have to learn.

A good way to learn about the different classes could be to have an option to get a popup in a corner when you die telling you which ‘character’ killed you, what class he belongs to and what his special ability is. Just some short info and general stats so you don’t get that “WTF JUST HAPPENED” when you die to something unexpected (mine, turret, airstrike etc).

Well the reason why I don’t think there’s actually “a lot to learn” is because the purpose of each class is mostly maintained across the board. Medics heal and revive, recons snipe, fops gives ammo and does aoe/aerial damage, soldiers have heavy weaponry, engineers have funky damage tools, etc. They may conduct the process differently, but it all ends up in the same place. I mean even CoD has more of a learning curve in terms of things you will encounter and have to learn along the way, so yea.
