Heavy Weapon/Shield Idea

I had an idea about a new weapon for a heavy.

A large SWAT shield that covers the heavy from the front when used. Made from the same “plastic steel” stuff the unbreakable windows are made from!

Pros - all bullets bounce from the front of the shield when wielded in “iron sights mode”, protects 50% of the body from one side when not used.

Cons - only available to heavy, can only use a pistol as sidearm, heavy moves at the same speed as a spinning gatling when used and cannot climb, does not stop grenades, not as clear to see through.

I could tolerate using it if you could peek behind the shield and shoot with your pistol. That’s what I want to see in case this was ever made.

Otherwise I don’t know what the point would be if you cannot do anything else than stand with the shield. I mean if you couldn’t shoot or complete objectives. Sure you could stand in a doorway but then someone would throw a grenade.

I thought about something like this, and/or a deployable cover unit for the soldier or engi.

In the other thread about the current weapon shield users pointed out that your model does not change from a 3rd person perspective regardless of whether you are hip firing or ADSing. If this is inherently how Brink works it would kinda throw things off. Like other players would basically have no idea you’re ADSing and using the shield and thus have no way to compensate like throw a 'nade, flank you, etc.

I plan to try out the shield on my heavy soldier once I level my Engy (level 23) up one more. I will let you know what I think afterwards. Just don’t use a shield on your secondary, since the equip speed will be effected. :slight_smile:

My thoughts were when you had the shield selected, but not in iron sights mode and had it activated, it would just hold it in your arm at the side.

When in iron sights mode, its plonked in front of the heavy and he can move ultra slow stopping bullets from hitting or passing him.

Admitedly I have no idea for what it can do if you have it selected and use left click. Shield bash is pointless as we already have melee. Any ideas?

The problem I was getting at earlier though is that regardless of mode (ADS or hip holding/firing) all characters look the same. Like you don’t see characters ADS when they are doing so. Therefore, there would be no visual change to your character as far as everyone else around you is concerned.

I don’t know if this is coded into the game so it has to be this way for all weapons, but it is the case for all weapons currently in game. Like I said earlier with this weapon this could cause problems because there would be no way for a 3rd party to tell the difference between you holding the shield at your side vs ADS.
