hey, i need a new headset and was wondering if someone can make a recommendation.
preferably something that plugs into a USB port but a standard jack will be alright as long as its not garbage or will crap out quickly.
i think @Amerika posted something helpful in a thread like this once bt i cant find it
Well, I posted about my setup which not everyone will want to spend money on. It’s not super expensive in comparison to high end audio equipment but might be more expensive than most people who simply want to play games can justify.
I have Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones and a FiiO E17 Alpen Amplifier USB DAC that I bought a couple of years ago. The DAC isn’t really necessary if you buy the 32 or 80ohm version of the headphones (I have the 250ohm). The sound quality for gaming and music with these is AMAZING. And the comfort level is way higher than anything else I’ve ever owned (and I’ve owned a decent amount of headphones). So I definitely recommend DT770’s.
I would recommend not buying most “gamer” headphones though. Sure, some of them might be alright but for comparable prices you can buy headphones that aren’t targeted at gaming that sound much better and are a lot more comfortable to wear for hours on end. Gaming headphones tend to focus on buzz words and bad features like 7.1 surround sound that doesn’t sound good and doesn’t give you any better positional audio. It’s like when you buy a gaming mouse and the biggest thing on the box is that it has 10,000 DPI which is essentially a marketing scam. Gaming headphones are similar and they tend to not prioritize certain things I personally want in headphones (for both gaming and using for music).
This is a good video on the subject.
Oh, and for a good review of those HyperX Cloud II’s here you go. As you can tell I respect Hardware Canucks. Their reviews are extremely fair and unbiased I’ve found.
