Head - Non Animated and no ears

(Blowfish) #1

Hi,

A question from a total noob on modeling. I have made this axis covert skin, which look like the nazi dude from the Hellboy movie. Problem is, that its has ears. How do I remove the ears. Can anyone help me with this ?

Make me a no ears head would be nice! But I also would like some good links to start trying do some modeling my own… have to start somewhere ;-).

Ps. head-no-ears.md3 would be for this guy :

 1. create head-no-ears.md3
 2. delete ear vertexes
 3. create faces in the holes
 4. UV those faces
 5. Write a new .skin file (If I’m not wrong…)
 6. Enjoy

I am not using anything, since I havent done anything with modeling yet (thats why the noob part was in my post). So I would like to hear what kind of tools, software, etc is usefull to start with.

I am messing around a bit with Linux/Misfit Model 3D. Will do some extra reading

Ok, I just found out that my question was very simple :o. Even for a mega moddeler noob. I opened the non animated head , head_1.md3 , remove the ears and saved it again. And this can be done without any knowledge of modeling.

When I tried to do so with the head.md3, I get an animated bla bla error. And when I delete to much , I get a hole in the side.

I guess I have to do some more reading about modeling, since it looks like a very nice thing to do. Creating new 3d objects :D. Even more fun when you can use them in ET or so.

Can I just use any created md3 object as a head :-). Maybe a new Halloween kinda head. Not the nice pumpik, but something new.

WHY didnt anyone tell me it was so much fun to do !?

(th0rn3) #6

Because you didnt ask
I’ll tell you something in advance:
Programming is fun
Mapping is fun
Scripting is fun
 good luck

(IndyJones) #7

i disagree. scripting is a PAIN IN THE ASS.

(-SSF-Sage) #8

Scripting is my favourite along with creating cool 3d content. I found programming not as fun as these are, but if I’d get to programm some really cool features for a really cool game, I might think different. Yet tho I’m a noob in programming.

(Blowfish) #9

Well I am hooked now. Will buy a license of Milkshape and go crazy. Followed some quides, so I hope I know some basic stuff now. Already found out that ET doesnt like more then 1025 vertex or so in a md3 model. Got some kinda error like this.

(-SSF-Sage) #10

It’s 1024 verts per one obj, one obj can have one shader, one model can have many objs. Et supports about 8000 verts per model if I remember right.

(th0rn3) #11

Nooooo, dont buy ms3d license! Its not worth. You better buy lightray3d license. Milkshape is a cool program, but it can not support .mdm - player model files. Lightray3d supports alot of files, and it has addons.

(-SSF-Sage) #12

If you asked me, I wouldn’t buy any license. I would not crack either. I would use free blender (I am using). Which is very powerful and easy program. A real treasure. It also has a big community and good tutorials. Esp. good video tutorials in youtube.

(th0rn3) #13

I know how to use blender, but it produces a lot of verices. Anyway, dont waiste your money, just crack those programs

(Pegazus) #14

Blender is my love and is perfect, i have tried Cinema4D, it was pleasing after reading a 40 page instruction manual that lead to nothing. lol. Blender is the way to go.

(Nail) #15

cracking programs is illegal, bad form on a dev forum

(-SSF-Sage) #16

Produces a lot of vertices? Are you out of your mind? You can produce same mesh on each program. Speaking of the feature in blender that you can merge the vertices with, you can have almost half of the vertices in some types meshes.

(Blowfish) #17

Have been reading this wiki :

Doesnt realy help you make up your mind … lol

I am using the 30 days version of Milkshape now, but will also check out Lightray3d. After that I will buy a copy :). Using illegal software will slow down development of the product … Sometimes when there is no 30 day version, I might get a not so very legal version … but when I keep using it, I always buy the license…

(th0rn3) #18

ofcorse cracking programs is illegal, but its very hard to earn that money, developers want a little bit too much for their software.
@{SSF}Sage: I know that I can produce same mesh on each program, but blender is firstly ment for high-poly. Anyway it’s the matter taste

(-SSF-Sage) #19

Still what is the difference? For adding anything premade, there’s a setting for amount of tris for it to have. There’s a setting for anything. In reality you don’t need them, as you mostly work with editing cubes and cyllinders and extruding them. It took me whole lotta couple hours to get some hang on the editor.
ofcorse cracking programs is illegal, but its very hard to earn that money, developers want a little bit too much for their software.
It’s a chicken and egg problem. The rule of thumb with tools is mostly “if you can justify paying for it, buy it to show the developers some love”.
Now the discussion is al around “justifying it”. If you’re using it to produce something which earns you money, that justifies buying it. If not, feed the question to the trolls and let them fight it out.

Anyway, enough of warez and ethical questions.

Blender: it is free and it comes with a whole set of tools. You only need to wrap your head around the interface, which is quite different, to say the least. But if you’re learning modelling anyway, you can still consider it.
