Handheld ports.

Just thinking that a 3DS or NGP (PSP2) port of this game might not be that far-fetched. Probably wouldn’t have the seamless SP/MP concept, but I think most of the other features of the game would remain intact.

I know neither system is out yet, but it appears that they are powerful enough to pull it off.

No one’s really thought of this for a game of this size because it’s rather kind of ridiculous. But now with these new, more powerful handhelds, maybe more stuff is possible. Ya never know.

But honestly, I can tell you now with certainty that Brink is never going to be released on a handheld, so don’t keep your hopes up, sorry.

(Herandar) #3

And you work for Bethesda, or Splash Damage?

(BioSnark) #4

When I see a handheld in a major release I see franchise cash in. Each to their own, however.

(Nail) #5

you can play Quake or Rage on a phone, why not a PSP ? hell, you can host Quake on a phone these days

(SockDog) #6

For a workable version I’d doubt the 3DS has the resolution to pull it off. The NGP however seems to have both the controls and hardware to pull of a port of some description including the ability to hookup to an actual TV. If it wasn’t for my abhorrent hate of analogue sticks for FPS I’d be clamouring for a portable version of Brink and L4D2.

(BioSnark) #7

Yes. Portable platforms have different control and graphics limitations. They shouldn’t just be copies of other platform games with bad controls and graphics. The one fps port I want to see attempted for iphone is doom 2 (or doom/wolf) because aiming didn’t include up/down and the 3d engine wouldn’t whore processor (= battery) power.

iirc, carmack said rage on iphone (which is a rail shooter) did not run on idt4 (mild disappoint).

(aaarrm) #8

I knew someone would make a statement like this, even though it’s blatantly obvious it will never happen. Just wondering, do you honestly think it will?

(KnollDark) #9

no…

(SockDog) #10

I think it’s entirely possible if Brink is a popular and successful game. Reusing resources from Brink for a NGP port would be very low risk for Bethesda and allow them to get into the NGP space a lot quicker than building a totally new game from the ground up.

(LyndonL) #11

Screw the NGP… I want it released for the new XPeria PS phone

(SockDog) #12

Yeah, not totally sold on the PSPhone. Seems like a lot of dimension investment into something that’s going to drain your phone battery.

(Herandar) #13

No, I don’t think it will, but it isn’t impossible as you imply. SD wouldn’t be involved, it would be given to a different developer to port. I don’t claim to know the future.

(LyndonL) #14

Agree 100% and the likelihood of me buying it is 1%. Still… pretty awesome! heh.

(DarkangelUK) #15

A tweet by Carmack regarding Rage on NGP “We don’t have any plans, but the NGP could handle Rage retuned for 30 hz and a smaller dataset.”

(SockDog) #16

wonder if SD does another project with Bethesda is they’ll have access to id Tech 5 or if they’ll continue to branch off id Tech 4 on their own. 5 does seem to be scaling to different platforms very well.

I think in most cases it is ridiculous to want mobile gaming more sophisticated than tetris. When I play a video game I like to sit down at my powerful computer with a large monitor and good sound to enjoy the game’s immersion. 1990’s games on my netbook I can at least still have battery life. Gaming laptops only make sense if you goto large lan parties often. Most people get those because a desktop is not cute or they have to play WoW in the library to show everyone they play WoW. No, let’s pay another $300 so we can play Brink on a hand held and get hardly anything out of it. Give it multiplayer so we can always have unstable teams where no one can remain long as they change buses or their battery dies.

(LyndonL) #18

You want Larger screens for portable gaming? Why not try the Sony Playstation Tablet then?

(Herandar) #19

Great! Fortunately for humanity, not everyone feels the same way. I’ve put hundreds of hours on two DS units, as the Final Fantasy Tactics games are much more complex than Tetris. Too bad for me that I got hardly anything out of it… Oh wait, I did!!

Some people get enjoyment from squaredancing. I don’t, but I’m not going to disparage it on a public forum, because I don’t enjoy it.

(Herandar) #20

Why not the Microsoft Surface, as it is already out?
