Pressing F clears the message and icon (causing it to teleport to where the jug currently is), but it will stay there in front of you until you do (you can move and it stays there as well).

it often stayed with me when I’ve simply returned objective; even if i didnt die yet.

Confirming this as well, I thought it was related to death, but then saw it happen without incurring a death in the meantime, so I’m not so sure they’re related.
