GtkRadiant texture compression

(Davros) #1

:banghead:

hi, im having trouble getting texture compression to work for GtkRadiant.

i dont think its a problem with GtkRadiant as ive tried reinstalling and the other versions on my pc (1.2.13 and 1.3) have the same problem. So i figured its a driver problem. I have a geforce 3 with 41.09 drivers but tried the latest ones 56. somthing but i still have the same problem :banghead:

any ideas ? :drink:

in ati drivers we have to enable texture compression or it wont be available in gtkradiant, not sure how youd do this in nvidia drivers but you could try using power strip which allows us to override dedault driver switches.

i did a bit of hunting around and its because im using a 16 bit desktop colour depth :D. well ive always used default 16 bit with 1024 res so i dunno what went wrong :d thanks anyway ratty :thumbup:

@Torchy, your welcome :slight_smile:

and I didn`t know about the desktop color depth limiting that option… so if you wanted to work in 32 bit, could you then use the compression on your gfx card?

yeh its working as normal now. just as long as i use 32 bit desktop. weird :smiley:

cool and have you noticed any benefit of using compressed tex in radiant?

In only limits the option because of the bug where 16 bit desktops (on some video cards) end up in software mode.

If the editor is using more textures than would otherwise fit in video memory, texture compression can help performance. It can also reduce overall memory usage.
