some people in the forum use gtkradiant and some use sdradiant… what is the difference??
GTK or SDradiant??
SDRadiant is simply too old. It’s basicly SD’s counterpart of Q3Radiant, which is now obsoleted by GTKRadiant 1.4 and 1.5. (Most tutorials are still for version 1.4)
But is there any particular, significant reason to use 1.4 or 1.5 over SDRadiant? SD one has keys and shortcuts that make mapping a whole lot easier while the latter ones don’t. 1.5 is the worst in this regard. After getting used to the key setup in SD, using 1.5 or even 1.4 feels awkward, clunky.
I hear that. I feel the same way about 1.5 from using 1.4. There’s just certain hotkeys, shortcuts, middle mouse select/paste texture, etc…
-The only thing that really matters is your q3map2 version.
Especially when using up-to-date shaders and dotproduct2 blending. As long as you’re using a .bat to compile your maps(with latest q3map2) you’re always better off mapping with what your more comfortable with than trying to keep up with “what’s new”.
imho.
I didn’t like the middle mouse texture copy/paste thing either. Once you get used to it, its as good as the old way or better.
Another thing I missed at first was the Z thing. Once you get used to ctrl+tabing its better in that way too.
One thing that had me switching back to 1.4 was clipping brushes and vertex editing. 1.5 prevents you from breaking the brush. That seems annoying until you realize that you can just split the brush in half.
Theres nothing else I missed from 1.4.
And then theres the nice feature of tags in the texture browser.
I think once you get used to it you’d agree that 1.5 is better.
