Graphical Cvar Unlocks in next Patch?? [SUPPORT]

(INF3RN0) #1

I understand that SD possibly does not want to unlock a lot of the cvars until they iron out the bugs at default settings, but at this point such a method is going to do more harm than good. Cvars like r_skippostprocess 1 doubles people’s frame rates, and other cvars should result in greatly improved performance. Just because such cvars being unlocked could possibly discourage identifying some performance bugs does not at all mean they will entirely. People are still able to switch over to default settings per patch and give feedback. There is no reason why those waiting for their performance problems to be solidified should be punished with waiting until that time in the near future that they have been resolved. So this is why I am suggesting that you guys @ SD start leaking or gradually unlocking graphical cvars for Brink in the next patches so that you can keep your player base who is struggling to run the game. I don’t expect a response on this, but I hope it is discussed among SD devs privately. Thanks.

At this point I’m almost surprised that we still have access to the console.

I can only take a shot in the dark and wonder if the CVARs are just not as stable and tested as they would have been if the PC was a lead platform. PC gamers will push to both extremes but the consoles need just one working configuration each.

I wish I could disable bloom and depth of field somehow, probably possible with the locked cvars. Also the best way they could unlock them would be to add them into in-game options for everyone to tweak.

Like Bloom on/off
Post process on/off
etc.

Would be so simple and useful.

Being able to disable the following would be nice.

Depth of field
Camera shake due to explosions
Damage effects (screen and sound)
Rim highlighting
Reduce the size/opacity of the hud icons (can’t see **** captain)
Fade in when spawning

Also being able to change crosshair colour, size and disable the pulsing/spread scaling.

You also sound slightly bitter after this last patch. Here’s to hoping our faith was well deserved and we’ll be happy after the next patch or the information about it.

(weeschwee) #8

i think disabling camera shake due to explosions would be unfair considering the explosions make it hard to aim. if some people could have all the stability while others don’t, it wouldn’t be fair. maybe SD should reduce the shake for all players.

Why the hell can’t we picmip things? Seriously, it’s pretty dumb.

The specs you guys set for this game are way too high. I can run it very well [/i]almost[/i] 60 fps on a 2 year old laptop, but I can’t because the texture resolutions on the characters are too high, and I can’t LOD anything. : /

It’s absurd.

(dommafia) #10

picmip? na… Once you need to go to those lengths you need to upgrade.

(riptide) #11

I still picmip in quake live. Some people simply do not care about graphics and in fact do not like distractions. I don’t care what game I’m playing or how good my PC is, if it has multiplayer and I can set picmip I will.

(SphereCow) #12

Uh, no. Some people like to play with it turned up so that graphics can be turned down. I do need an upgrade, but that’s tangential. The idea that you need to upgrade because a game prohibits you from disabling super high res textures is silly, even for people with top of the line machines. Some people just want performance.

My main problem is that my PC is really outdated, and can almost run Brink incredibly smooth, except for some cvars that haven ever been locked before, being locked now. That means SD’s min specs for Brink could have been far lower if they optimized it properly, allowing far more people to play.

Well half my fun was loading a map in devmap, setting the round timer to an hour and just exploring (made it from bottom to top of this section). Need the devmap to to enable locked cvars so I can extend the round timer (these jumps take time to find and master), need noclip to see if reaching a point is feasible; it also makes getting back to the starting point so much easier, and timescale so I can test angles and timing etc.

Really this was all a bit pointless anyway since demo recording is disabled, but it’s something I enjoyed doing and my fun has been taken away… so yeah I’m slightly bitter.

(Farlong) #14

If they unlocked it, people could do their own problemsolving. The community can find solution often much faster then a developer can, since the end user can troubleshoot his/her specific problem. Not to mention skipping all the usual get new drivers/reinstall that can take a while to get through.

(zicogja421) #15

Definitely. There seem to be a lot of people that do not even want to bother playing the game simply because they are getting low frame rates… and understandably so.

(GreasedScotsman) #16

r_useHighQualityPostProcess 0 turns off some of this stuff I believe.

(INF3RN0) #17

bampppp :wink::wink:

(kilL_888) #18

quote by rhado:

“no one ever takes away your control”

i know he meant something else, but i think it must apply to the console, too.

who needs post processing? looks nice a few minutes but in the end i would rather have my constant frame rate.

after 10 minutes playing time you’re in the tunnel anyways, so why blurring anything artificially. all you see is your crosshair. screw depth of field. giiiive 10 more frames per second.

Geeeeeev dis nao plox! :frowning:

This thread needs some serious attention from the Devs.

On another note, what cvars are reset by the cvar_restart command? I get 7fps in game normally and in between the time I run cvar_restart and the time it crashes with an error, “unable to find cvar unlockfraggrenade” I get 30+.
