My humble opinion after playing since the closed beta is that the best time to start was during the closed beta.
After that, we got the open beta with a huge afflux of new players, along with a whole lot of cheaters in an AC that wasn’t fit to handle them.
Now we got a new AC, but the community size has dwindled and there are two types of players you’ll find. Old time players with a lot of experience and super recent newcomers. In the middle players are few.
This leaves matches at the mercy of this huge skill gap and if the balancing isn’t just right, most likely your game is going to suck. Either you’ll be getting stomped or you’ll be in a game without a shred of challenge.
As a newcomer you’ll have trouble keeping up and might get frustrated. If you do start playing, I strongly recommend you do the tutorial first. Then, stick to the MAX level 5 servers until you get accustomed to the maps and the mercs you own and those that are on rotation.
Once you hit level 5, stick to objective and try out stopwatch if you feel motivated to stick it out on possibly long duration unbalanced games.
I definitely don’t recommend competitive if you don’t play with at least 3 more friends. And even then, matchmaking is not there yet.
Now what you do got going for you if you start now, is the huge amount of mercs to unlock and hence the motivation to regularly do the proposed missions (every three hours) to gain cash and unlock them. Also trying them out and learning each class until you master them is fun.
But remember, many games will be completely unbalanced and it’s a reality you’ll have to live with. Nevertheless, the different mercs and the fast gameplay might be just the thing you’re looking for.
I also need to disclose the fact that there are quite a few bugs running around that need fixing, but overall you’ll be able to play fine.
Windows 10 compatibility is not an issue. I myself run it just fine.
There is the occasional kick to desktop which happens when the AC crashes. Nothing to do about that until they fix it somehow.
So all in all, there is fun to be found in DB right now, but know that you can also find a lot of frustration.
