Good screen recording softwares ?

(Eox) #1

Everything is in the title.

I did got better in game recently, I am oftenly playing with some friends these days, and there’s still some cheats issues in game that may require an in game footage. So I kinda need a screen footage capture software to record a bit of everything that passes through my mind.

Please make sure that it won’t eat an insane amount of RAM : I already tried FRAPS, but when I tried to record something (I was playing Warframe when I tried it) I lost a huge chunk of my FPS. Also, try to suggest something free if possible.

Thanks.

I guess the obvious suggestion would be to use Shadowplay if you’ve got a Nvidia 6xx series card or newer.

My graphic card is a NVDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti. Looks like it won’t do it.

Have you tried OBS already? You can download it here for free: https://obsproject.com It’s not only for broadcasting

Okay, trying it.

Before Shadowplay I preferred Dxtory.

we just need in-game replays system!

Dxtory seems to work very well if you are having trouble recording but the files are just so huge.

Not any bigger than fraps. You can tweak the settings to your liking to lower file size or recording requirements.

Another program I used to use is MSI Afterburner, they had reasonable file sizes and recording requirements, but I found you could get the same result in Dxtory, so I switched over.

Wait really?
How do you record smaller files beacuse uploading any of my gameplays would take ages.

Lossless is nice and all, but useless once YouTube starts playing with the file. One key thing to look at is if the capture software is more taxing on the CPU (ie, Fraps) or GPU (ie, Shadowplay).
@Eox I just picked up a GTX750 2gb for under $150US on NewEgg, just food for thought.

plays.tv has a nice recorder I’ve been using for the past couple weeks in DB:shameless plug
makes popping small clips onto the web very easy.

for full games (in full hd@60mbps) I use avermedia recentral w/ an extremecap u3. OBS I still need to tweak as it stutters like crazy when recording in equivalent quality.

You should always render the raw .avi or whatever file type your recording software puts out into something like .mp4, you’ll shave off something like 80% of the file size by doing this.

^ Bingo. Since YouTube compresses the files anyway uploading a lossless format means extra upload time for no extra graphical quality.

Another potentially important factor for content creation is how the software handles the audio. With Shadowplay, for example, it renders all the audio to the same track which makes leveling live voiceovers difficult. It all depends on what your goal is with the content.

Here’s a little side-by-side of Fraps, Shadowplay, and AMD GVR. There’s some good generaly information about capturing to be had.

I really like Bandicam.

It’s free, shows the current FramesPerSecond, makes videos in a good quality/size-ration and doesn’t occupy/use the RAM/CPU that much. You can adjust the quality of the video, which codec to use, so the file-sizes can vary.
However, you can only record 10 minutes, and after 10 minutes you have to press the button again^^

Does anyone has a tutorial for OBS ? Or maybe should I try something easier ?

It has a hella lot of buttons and functions. I have an hard time to configure it.

I messed around with it a bit before getting a card capable of Shadowplay and had the same opinion. This should be what you need.
