We started the server somewhere in December 2009 and we enabled alias tracking on the 19th of that month. We asked our GSP to upload the file that contains the PBguids and aliases in May 2011 and this is the breakdown per month:

These numbers are based on PBguids, which means smurfs are filtered out. Can’t stress that enough!
The numbers for the first months are obviously overinflated since we were kinda catching up with the player base, but if I count the average for 2011, we still get about 18 new players per day. The file was uploaded on the 10th of May, which means that we had 2352 new PBguids in 130 days.
I don’t know where they come from or why they decide to start playing a game that’s more then 3 years old. All I can say is that these numbers amaze me.
And to answer your question: my guess is that if Activision decided to pull the plug on this game, it would collapse within weeks. I can’t speak for Serenade, we might try to run an unranked server, but I somehow doubt it would be viable.
I really wish that Activision and SD would have made different choices, but this is the situation and I guess we’ll have to live with that.
I’ll see if I can add the numbers for the remainder of 2011, but that requires a bit of work.
