GoldRush Overlapping and Clipping Questions

(ConchMan) #1

I loaded up radiant and decided to look at GoldRush yet again to see what knowledge I could steal from its genius. I ended up with some questions instead.

  1. Is it ok to overlap detail brushes? I noticed that in many areas of GoldRush the terrain passes right through the walls, overlapping other detail brushes but not overlapping the structural brushes underneath. This surprised me because everything I had read so far has laid down, as a cardinal rule, “don’t overlap your brushes”.

  2. Why is it that some of the stairways are not covered with clip brushes? Most of them are clipped, but not all. For example, near the first allied spawn, if you walk forward as though playing and stop where you see the slanted palm tree, the stairway to the right is not clipped. Two other stairways near the allied spawn are also not clipped. And yet again, near the health and ammo cabinets (on the truck escape route) the stairway that leads down to nowhere has not been clipped.

1: There’s nothing wrong with overlapping brushes (says djbob http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4859 )

2: I think only someone from SD that designed the map could answer this. But I’ve read somewhere on this forum that goldrush was made by 4 different mappers, each doing their own piece of the map. That might explain why some areas have clipped stairs and other areas don’t.

If i remember correct, detail brushes dont CSG each other during the compile, therefor u can have them overlapping. Structural brushes do CSG (carve) each other if they touch.

About the stairs, the hight a player can “move-up”, autoclimb is 16 radiant units. So some stairs that has higher steps has clipbrushes so that it feels like autoclimb ingame.
