Gmax tool - a noob mapper has questions

(Louis' Demise) #1

I am a noob mapper and I am currently looking into learning the craft. I work for an Autodesk dealer and started looking into what I could do with MAX to start with what I know, and ran across this “freeware” version from discreet:

Those of you who are more experienced, how does this relate to Enemy Territory mapping? Is this useful? Where does it fit into the design/build process?

Thanks for any help or comments.

No it cannot be used unless the game publisher has made arrangements (purchased a license) to create gamepacks. Without the gamepacks, GMAX can only import 3DS files but it will only save in it’s own proprietary format. So creating models for ET is impossible unless SD purchases a licence (I believe it’s about $100k) to create a gamepack. They would then have to create a gamepack and export the models. I do believe that id did though and there’s one to export into one of the quake formats (I’m not sure about this so do a search you might find something).

I’m pretty sure you can export .md3 models with gmax.

The idea behind Gmax was ok : A shame that, indeed, as said, they charge companies for them to release the gamepacks on it…

But yes, you can make .md3’s with Gmax : I used 'em in Quake3 : and, afaik, then they can be used in RTCW/ET, not ?

Yeah that’s the gamepack I was talking about for Quake III.

The GMAX page is here to download it:

The tech downloads for quake are here (but can’t find the tempest pack here):
http://www.idsoftware.com/business/home/techdownloads/

You can find the tempest agreement here. When you click “I accept” it will start downloading:

This can be used to make .map files but it should be used for md3 models then imported into your ET level as a prefab.

i’ve been playing with gmax and tempest, but i’ve had some problems exporting maps terrains.

has anyone been successfull in exporting a simple terrain map using tempest?

to use their compile i think you require quake3 tools to be installed, but i’m not exactly sure if that’s true, since i don’t have the game, and haven’t read up on it.

i’d eventually just like to use gmax to export some models since it’s development interface for meshes seems to be a lot nicer than radien
