General Discussion - Community made content?

(gg2ez) #1

Should DB allow community made content like maps, skins, and possibly even weapons?

With DB moving further and further into full release, do you think that community made content should be available for DB eventually?

Personal Opinion: I will openly state that DB should allow community created content IF IT IS DONE IN A POSITIVE WAY. With the addition of community content comes a large amount of exploits if not handled correctly eg. Maps for farming, invisible skins, OP items, ect. In order to address this issue, I would propose a system where items had to be approved by a committee of trustworthy players or simply the devs. This would make the system a lot like the TF2 workshop where skins and items had to be voted in and reviewed by the devs.

I read some people writing about an possible sdk. Didnt hear or read anything official about that though. But it will definately will bloom the game and keep it alive for much much longer.

I agree. Games only survive because of the communities that devote to them.

(DMaster2) #4

Don’t really care. But if it happens things need to get the devs approval, otherwise there can only be harm.

This game honestly needs community run servers, community created maps and skins, and as long as they all fit the theme of Dirty Bomb and don’t deviate from it then I’m all for it. Don’t need another wacky hat simulator.

They said they want to do it on a stream, but it’s a really long term project so it’s not any time soon. They said something like it’d take 6 months alone just to do that. And that would be 6 months without any content.

Yeah I think it should be left until the betas over, but the longevity and possibilities that would be available to the game would far outweigh the risk.

Community made maps and servers.

If community starts making maps, Nexon will be sad because it won’t be able to easily charge for them.

SD has the reins on all financial decisions.

I voted yes to DB allowing community made content, but only for Maps or Skins, not weapons or other devices. We should just supply the idea for those and let DB choose what to make and balance it accordingly.

For example, i’d love to see a new Merc with a wall mountable Turret Dispensing health or revives, but i don’t want it made by the community for balance reasons. It’s mere existence might be unbalancing but that’s for DB to decide.

I could see a mix of ‘official’ servers and community owned servers so user made content doesn’t taint the vanilla DB experience. I’d also prefer it was done steam works style with as little hassle as possible to the player for adding and using. The problem with mixed servers stems back to the ETQW days where players didn’t want to play on unofficial servers as they were unranked, so they didn’t gain any stats from playing there, and just like the current option to spawn private servers I doubt we would gain credits and XP from community custom content servers.

If SD can find a fine balance, implement a decent Q&A system so the crap gets filtered and also find a way to promote and even sell user content to the masses then I could see it taking off. If it goes the way of ET where every server is full of crap then no, just no.

Would certainly break the boredom of the same 5 maps over and over again, don’t get me wrong they are sweet maps all of them, but none of them have the facing worlds/deck/dust2/metro element to them that wants me to keep playing.

(stormcloudLoyalist) #14

Meant you choose yes, oh well

(XavienX) #15

Definitely, but right now they aren’t doing it because they already have mercs developed before the game came out and they are still tweaking them. Maybe after they release all mercs, which is like a year later O_O, they’ll start using fan creations.

I think that with the trouble SD has to sort it’s own creations out, balancing, keeping them bug free, etc., it would be nuts to allow exterior content to enter the game. At least for the near to mid future I think it’s a terrible idea. In the very long run though, once DB has itself sorted out, why not? But then again, SD has more time to get it’s own stuff out in a proper fashion, so why make things complicated then as well?
