Gather/Pug Steamgroup, for instant Pugification!

(Bitey) #1

So after receiving the ok, I’ve decided to make the public opening of the Extratction(DirtyBomb) gather/pug steamgroup. I’ve been trying my best to slowly grow the pug scene so that we don’t only have to rely on forum posts and signups, and usually I’m trying to start a 5v5 every day. So now I invite all players who are interested in 5v5 action with voice communication to join up and have a blast!

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dirtybombpugs

The rules will be simple, join the steam group and wait for steam announcements. When an announcement is made you join the steamchat, the first ten in are the ten players who will be used to gather/pug. Then we’ll assemble on an agreed upon VoIP or by default the EvacZone teamspeak.

(Mustang) #2

Just out of interest why didn’t you just join the existing steam group instead of creating a new one?

(Bitey) #3

Then I shall be in both, and it’s not advertised anywhere :<

Also, that one seems to be invite only =\ Not easily accessible

(shaftz0r) #4

why would you ever use steam for something like this? just use irc like every real nerd on the planet. using a random 3rd party resource hog just to communicate makes no logical sense to me

(k1ruaa) #5

I tend to agree with this

(Grissi) #6

Even though Irc might be better there are way to many players today that don’t even use irc. They don’t want to setup a client and don’t like keeping it open in a browser. In the end does it really matter if we use irc or steam, both will serve its purpose while we get games going. More people are using steam today so using steam is the logical choice.

I don’t know about you guys but I want to play some semi coordinated 5v5 games time to time, so why don’t we just help each other out and make this happen?.

(slanir) #7

IRC may be “better” but it’s more difficult to get people on it.

Also what grissi said! :stroggbanana:

(eiM) #8

There are still people out there that don’t use steam at all, like me

(Rex) #9

I admire you! Thumbsup

I love IRC for it’s simplicity but it’s basically extinct in North America. Built in pugs via in game competitive matchmaking like CSGO has is the way to go!

Agreed

It’s invite only because we wanted to have some level of damage control in terms of who can access the group. People may choose to talk about the game in there with public folks present.

they dont like keeping it open in a browser, yet keeping steam open somehow makes sense for a game that isnt on steam? O_o making excuses for ignorance helps nobody

I used irc for years, I know how it works and whats good about it.

The fact is that its not enough to keep the old players but you also need to get new blood. Most players today use steam meaning steam is simply more effective to gather up group of players than irc.
Steam has been working very well as well, we have played like 20 pugs just this weekend - and we are just getting started.

(Bitey) #16

So far it’s been extremely successful this weekend we’ve had many excellent pugs! The amount of games that I played in a 5v5 setup has been more then the last two weekends combined. For everyone who has helped me get this pickup-game group rolling thanks for all the assistance it’s turned out to be so much fun meeting any playing with all of you  And for everyone wanting to experience more awesome 5v5 stuff try to join up on the steam group.

About steam:
The reason why the steam platform works well is due to it’s accessibility to both the mainstream gaming populace and many people of the current generation of skilled gamers. For the past 6 years steams worldwide ease of use and accessibility are what make it a great choice to pioneer these kind of upstarting pug/gather groups. IRC has fallen off in popularity these years because of it’s higher entry bar, not to mention the sometimes difficult way to find a client. Unless someone manually introduces you to IRC, many people might never hear of it. Steam just makes it easier for people of all ages, countries, and tech levels a simple entry solution.

Not to mention most of these successful pugs this weekend have been predominately orchestrated via steam, while attempt to launch pugs via IRC always seem to fall through. Beyond all of that, the best course of action is just to wait for the queying system and community tools to be implemented so that no external tools need to be used to enter gather/pug games.

Shoulda called it “Extraction Pugs” bwaha!

IRC is much better tool. The devs could add an irc app in the game as well that would allow you to connect to whatever channel you want.

But why is IRC better? Well for one you don’t have to have steam open. Secondly you can use bots to auto-organize pugs. There are tons of free IRC apps for pretty much every platform out there. Steam mobile apps are not out for each mobile device and the ability to just check whenever you feel like playing and you’re not near a PC is very beneficial. Steam isn’t bad and has its uses for organizing scrims and generally announcing things, but IRC is better in other regards.

Personally i prefere IRC and you are right about the bots, it’s really easy to setup the pug. Steam has one advantage over irc, and that’s the announcement system (the popup window). Even if i’m playing something and ignoring IRC on my 2nd monitor, i still saw Bitey’s announcements.
