I start up the game I only get the generic “sign-in error” my antivirus is mcafee win 8.1

Could you screenshot the error message you get upon starting up the game? It should say a little more than “Sign-in error”.
If you continue to get this message, I suggest verifying your game which can be found under this menu:

This will simply verify that you have all the correct game-files installed (because sometimes Steam can be funny about that, and if it’s not correct, it won’t let you sign in).
If you still continue having this problem, you could try contacting Tech Support for a solution. By using this link it should directly create a ticket under the correct section for you. Hope this helps!
