Game freezes during Intro video or first menus for single-core CPUs

(Hoodedsniper) #61

can we get any info from devs if this is being worked on?

(loller) #62
As far as I can tell this is a permanent state that the game leaves “the system” (your entire computer) in. It seems to me the game crashes on the Bink videos, you can skip them using “+set com_bootLogo 0” in your launch options. This should take you to the character selection screen, but if you have to create a new character you’ll crash again (because it tries to play the videos).

I’ve managed to get this solved, but unfortunately I don’t know how. It’s doing the same thing again now, after I previously fixed it, so I’m guessing it’s got something to do with the game crashes (try a reboot). Once the game hangs, it screws up for every subsequent game launch.

That’s all theory anyway, I didn’t make this game.
Have you tried renaming the video folder? so that it doesnt use it at all…?

(OursIsTheFury) #63

Well, in another post on here somewhere, a dev suggested removing the “brinkconfig.cfg” file in “Steam folder>\userdata<user ID>\22350\local\base” and this seems to have worked. He/she also suggested running the game with vanilla settings, to avoid false positives with rendering issues, so I removed “autoexec.cfg” as well (so no custom graphics settings in the config!).

I’m glad to say I’ve somehow managed to solve any issues I had. The game runs fairly smooth now, no FPS drops/lag in the menus, and very playable performance in game (without any fancy settings enabled). I don’t know how, it wasn’t working last night, but this is literally what I did:

[ol]
[li]Installed 11.5 over the top of 11.5a, but this didn’t update anything (which makes sense, because 11.5a is newer)[/li][li]Removed my ATI drivers (11.5a) completely, using the installer (no driver sweep)[/li][li]Re-installed 11.5 (not 11.5a, just the vanilla 11.5)[/li][li]???[/li][li]Profit[/li][/ol]
This is what I have configured right now:

[ul]
[li]Default settings (shadows: medium, textures: high), disabled everything fancy[/li][li]Launch options: +com_allowconsole 1 +set logfile 1 +set com_bootLogo 0[/li][li]No custom settings in autoexec.cfg[/li][/ul]
I run Brink with default settings, and everything fancy disabled on a C2D E8440 using ATI 5870HD 1GB and it runs OK. I hope this helps someone, I honestly did not expect this to start working, but it did.

(davidemo89) #64

Some new about this? Will I be able to play this game with 2CPUs 1core?
2393 MHz AMD CPU with MMX & 3DNow! & SSE & SSE2 & SSE3

thx dev :-)
(Hoodedsniper) #65

still hoping this gets patched.
Im in 100% agreement with Aldaril, its on your end, also ours, but mainly yours, a game shouldnt be that dependent.

also here are the portal 2 minimum specs, the CPU requirement is far greater and i played portal 2 flawlessly.

OS: Windows 7 / Vista / XP
Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher)
Since when is 2.0 GHz Dual-Core higher than 2.4 GHz Dual-Core???

Also the Minimum Specs have been announced online and are also printed on the DVD-Box. It's not SD's fault if your PC doesn't meet them by miles.

Read the entire thread, there are people who meet the minimum and still get this.

It is SD’s fault for them.

(Greer) #68

I just bought the game, have been reading through forums and saw this…and went nuts.
What the hell?I’ve been able to run lots of games on my old machine that I use now,UT3,Crysis,Portal 2,etc.Maxed out.Single core. And this cant?COME ON!Developers have to create a compatibility patch. This isn’t such a large trouble considering alot of single core processors can take it.

(Hoodedsniper) #69

This really needs to get patched.

If not its like i just threw $50 into a fire.

Except at least with a fire id be getting more entertainment then i do with brink atm.

(Nail) #70

no patch, the game is worth more than your computer

(davidemo89) #71

I have 2 phisical CPUs and it should work.

(Nail) #72

not if they’re under 2.4 ghz

(davidemo89) #73

They are not under 2.4ghz…

Processor: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 250 (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz

(Nail) #74

try enable Hyperthreading

(davidemo89) #75

I have to do it in the BIOS? thanks a lot for trying to help me.

(davidemo89) #76

I don’t see any info about this in the BIOS and I have discovered that AMD don’t have it.

(Wieke) #77

Wikipedia - Hyperthreading

Hyperthreading is a feature of Intel cpu’s. It’s not real mutlithreading. It just allows a single core to accept 2 threads at once so it always has something to do in case one of the two threads needs to wait for some sort of event. It doesn’t allow the cpu to actually physically calculate the instructions of 2 threads simultaneously.

That said bit lame that Brink refuses to run on a single core setup. I’m also surprised there are still people gaming on single core setups, even I upgraded nearly a year ago.

(kaz050) #78

oh brink dose run on 1 core even i tryed it i can play the missions too unlock the cool parts with oddly fps but doing the solo main missions fps just craps out

(Hoodedsniper) #79

how did you manage to get it to run.

(deadguyperez) #80
For people that have two separate single core CPUs, could they run the game with +set logfile 1 and post their cpu specs together with the part of the console log (this can be found in Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata<steamid>\22350\local\base\console.log) that reads something like:

3051 MHz Intel CPU with MMX & SSE & SSE2 & SSE3 & HTT
2 logical cores
2 physical cores
HT disabled in hardware
I do not have 2.4ghz processor like other people but I do have dual single cores so I’m hoping I can help since no one has done this yet.

I think your looking for this part:
