As said in the titel, sometimes while being downed on is sent to the merc selection screen just as if one would have been gibbed but without it actually happening. I witnessed it half a dozen times in maybe 8h of playing and at first considered me missing the actual gib even up until it happened with no enemy around me. It happens before the respawn counter has reached 0 and one can’t press space yet. I have a friend to whom it also happened.
