Future Quake Wars Editing Support Needed !

(carnage) #21

if what kat is saying is true then maby you would be better trying to get a team of modders to write some tutorials for you, its up to you to think of an incentive for them to do so though

i havent made any levels for doom3 but i dont imagine the editing to be so differnt that i have to leant from scratch, perhaps a site that looked in modding as a whole rather than just doom3 engine, although there will be key differenrces between engines and games there is a lot that can be carried across

You’re being paraniod. If my statements above come across as being a little ‘dry’ that’s intentional just to get some point across about usage and linkage. As for the tough choices comment, I was refering to how ‘we’ (the mods) handled the recent incident with a particular member, you’ll have to make some when you take responcibility over a site like you’re intending to run as unfortunately the ideal of a ‘democratically’ run website doesn’t work in reality, it just ends in chaos.

I knew I was being paranoid. Well your point was clear and I think my answer to it was to. About the choices, good call. Don’t know what to expect yet, luckily I’ve got a crew that does have experience :drink:

I say-just make it, be cautious while curtious & let the site prove itself.
Although maybe focusing your strength and “gung-ho” on an existing site might be the way to grab all that you envision but who would know this better than you.

I guess it all boils down to how long you plan on providing this for the community; as we all hate to contribute to sites that come and go.
The way I see it…on-line gaming has yet to “BOOM”, so if you’re in it for the long haul…I say go for it.
*Actually I see no more of a better time than right now to get your feet set in the ground for an assured place in the community spotlight later.

P.S. --If it ever becomes a hassle, please pass it on to someone in the community rather than just shutting it down. That is always upsetting.

Also keep in mind the costs involved when you’re considering the amount of time you want to be up and running. As we found with MC, it does get expensive and I’m sorry to say that very few people click on the banners you may have on site let alone donate cash; my own personal experience with this semi confirms what MC made so public. If you can somehow find a way to encourage banner clicking then you might have your costs covered allowing you to concentrate on content and organisation.

It sounds like a trivial concern now, but 2 or 3 years from now you’ll be thinking about it for sure.!

Have a look at www.level-designer.de which is a German mapping page. What makes that page really cool and a place where u can find treasure is the lots of real good tutorials and especially video tutorials… sadly all in German (well no prob for me but for those who dont speak German).
But one thing is for sure… with video tutorials on offer your traffic will explode.

I may make myself into a jerk here but…I think most video tutorials should be for sale, not for free.

If you are lazy enough that you need a video then you should pay the kind soul who put it together for you.
All sorts of people doing this for all sorts of programming nowadays(flash especially). It’s either sweat and Learn…OR pay - watch and mimic til’ u learn.
Introduction = free but then $3 or $5 for others - it isn’t much and it helps both sides prosper.

Either way…video is the tutorial of the future IMO.

Regarding the costs for the site. I’ve found a pretty and more importantly, really cheap host for the site. I will start of with a hosting packet that provides me with 10 GB traffic a month and 500 Mb diskspace for only 70 euros a year. I can always expand if the sites attracts a lot of people. Even with the biggest hosting packet it will cost me no more then 150 euros a year. That’s 12,50 a month, something that I could continue paying indefinetly. So the future is secure. If, by some strange twist of faith, I would to quit the site, I would pass it on to someone else. Instead of just going offline.

Video tutorials might be a thing for the future. But whe do not plan on starting with that or hosting. Because it would swallow up a lot of diskspace and bandwith. Were not planning on using banners either, perhaps in the long run a donation button would be put up. But no plans to generate income have been made. Were focussing on content.

If we manage to still be around after 2 of 3 years and we succeeded in assuring a place among the others and if we created enough content we will decide on a way to generate income to expand even further. If we could generate enough, we might even look into the whole video tutorial thing. But that’s something for the distant future.

I will get acces to the site this weekend and then we can get to it. Our first focus will be to create, accumilate resources and get more people to join the crew before even going online. Because were in desperate need for moderators.

You bet D3W will get on Q4 and ET:QW editing – and Prey too. No doubt about it. It’s about the engine behind it, not about an specific game content; it’s D3World, not D3LittleIsland.

(Infernis) #30

Your point being ?

(zeh) #31

My point is exactly what’s written on my post.

(Infernis) #32

That you are a narrow minded Doom3world fanboy ?

(carnage) #33

My point is exactly what’s written on my post

its probably true the doom3 world might spread to q4 and ETQW but i seriously doubt doom3world or Infernis have any wish to compeat with each other

the point of these sites are to help newbies and people who have been in the comunity for a long time so surely the more we have the better, the games and the engines alike have so much complexity that there will be enough for serveral sites to cover with some stuff left over so just wish Infernis good luck with his site and thank him for doing something helpful and selfless for the comunity
