free DLC - too little too late?

(dommafia) #1

I stopped playing the game a while ago and decided to wait for the dlc and the following insurgence of players that was sure to come. At this point though, do you think the dlc will have any effect? So many players have stopped playing :frowning:

We all want the dlc to come out so bad before the playerbase dries up, I was hoping for this week. At the same time though if they release it before it’s bug free then we’ll be bitching and complaining… Just feels like we are ****ed either way :sadpandaiconshouldbemade:

(tokamak) #2

The DLC is highly irrelevant if the core game is still shaky.

(xTriXxy) #3

all what you can do is to pray only. dlc or no dlc… nothing will change.

(DarkangelUK) #4

In all honesty I don’t think the DLC will do much, there’s not enough consistency there in the core game that will be helped with a couple extra maps and a couple more new more features. There may be a spike in the amount of players initially just to try it, but will probably drop over a short period of time.

(trigg3r) #5

honestly i don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference, hope i’m wrong though.
i barely played brink in the past week, and the reason is 'cause if i want to play on a populated player i have to deal with a 200 ping

(Slade05) #6

I stopped, too. Back in the ETQW release days, and having two betas behind, I still just couldn`t tear myself off the game, so much there was to discover and try. Month after month.

Not so with Brink. Maybe its the lack of scale after ETQW monstrosity, maybe something else I cant pinpoint, but I stopped.

Ah well, are stroggies still alive out there?

(signofzeta) #7

I can say that I am part of the problem of lack of players. I haven’t bought the game yet. I usually would have bought the game first day, but Magic the Gathering and You Don’t Know Jack got a hold of me.

(Nail) #8

Someone is screwin’ the pooch around this game, I’d really like to know who, I understand SD is pushing through to correct problems, but there’s a decided lack of information about things like ā€œWhy Steam couldn’t sell in UKā€, why in the ā€œOfficial Tech Forumsā€ at "Meh"thesda there are no responses from Bethesda and the only help they get is from members or redirects here. Who dropped the ball, why was this game so screwed on release ?
Why can’t ATI make working drivers ? Why are there no Linux servers let alone client ? What’s holding up the DLC release ? Can SD publish their next game themselves and stay true to their dreams ?

and released just month ago! somebody think DLC will change this number? or updates?

brink is just a bad game. thats all. we all know that. number of players is a proof.
brink is just a badly produced game. thats all. we all know that. number of players is a proof.
Fixed that for you. It’s ideas are somewhat interesting, but it’s the release flaws killing it.

(Zekariah) #11

Yeah, maybe. Or maybe its the fact that other shooters that succeed already have 2, 3 or more previous franchise titles to learn from and have started the word of mouth with cash in pocket.

Brink has come in the second half of this generation of consoles. Meaning console gamers are expecting an expensive production for campaign, and CoD or Halo wrapped in different packaging.

As for PC gamers, detailed and expansive options in matchmaking should have been readily available, not introduced in a patch or DLC.

So your comment is partially true…for the PC gamer. Unfortunately, HALF the console market are casual gamers who think TDM is the be all and end all of shooters. This might have something to do with their dropping population.

(I emphasized HALF because I’m a console gamer…and there are many of us who like to think about more than our K/D Ratios)

You should be looking at the peak for image 1. What time of day were these taken (GMT)?
Obviously player levels will fluctuate so the peak is more important than the current. It sucks if you’re in a ā€œBrink free zoneā€ while the rest of the world plays when you’re at work/school/whatever.

Admitedly that’s not a very high peak either but hopefully if the dlc includes some patching and they throw in a free weekend or steam sale or something then things may pick up.

Of course I could be completely wrong too. Either way I’m playing for fun at the moment and having fun.

(dazman76) #13

I haven’t played for a couple of weeks now :frowning: I’ve been playing Dirt 3, and even some older games instead of playing Brink - which I’d really like to be doing.

Personally - if the DLC doesn’t include a massive surprise (the kind of key binding options we should already have on PC) - I doubt I’ll even bother trying the new maps, sadly. I don’t want extra content, I want fixes around the content that already exists - which is plenty enough to have fun, and just requires some balancing. Brink has disappointed every player I know (personally that is) who bought it - although ATI have a hand in that for sure. If the DLC doesn’t also include fixes and tweaks for the fundamental stuff, I think Brink will be on my ā€œgathering dustā€ list come July.

Yes indeed - I’ve had a few games recently, and will continue to do so  I mostly get my arse kicked due to the ā€œsmall community = experienced playersā€ problem, but it’s still more fun for me than Brink is. It just seems to work, and that allows enjoyment - Brink doesn’t work in quite a few situations, and some of them are fundamental enough to stop me playing at all.

(light_sh4v0r) #14

I stopped as well, only on to test new drivers every now and then, but as long as I can’t properly play this I’m out. Brink did do 1 thing though, I’m happily reunited with ETQW. Went back to it and having a blast again  So many of the oldies still online as well!

(xTriXxy) #15

thanks! badly produced is correct.

(dazman76) #16

I’ll keep an eye out for you - won’t be around this weekend, but will hopefully go on for some matches next week  I noticed quite a few old names when I checked the server list recently, which is great to see. I only wish it was dirt-cheap on Steam, so I could convince a few others to try it out. Are there still servers running for the demo version I wonder?

Going forward, I see Brink as a close-knit, small community of people who like the game despite its faults and some frustration and are willing to wait for DLC. It is pretty much how alternative works. As long as SD keep supporting the game with new content, it will have longevity with the core player who is still enjoying it. Its not always a good thing for the fan when a game blows up and becomes mainstream with large numbers of people playing, because it usually gets changed and made more casual over time. I’ve yet to face players in Brink calling me a ****** or all that crazy stuff that is prevalent in other games. That’s what I think, although it may not be popular to say or is considered delusional. Whatever, not much more you can say besides that. Sometimes giving support means having faith. Sometimes you have to swim against the tide for awhile to get to shore. Sorry if that sounds lame. I don’t ****ing care!

(kamikazee) #19
Posted: Today, 08:28
I guess your point is that the amount of players can only increase during the day, but what if the peak is calculated based on the number of unique players in the last 24 hours?
This would seem the way they actually calculate those numbers, otherwise the numbers would wildly fluctuate every day around the ā€œreset pointā€.

(jazevec) #20

So far ā€œfree dlcā€ is not reality, just vapourwave.

I can see it being ā€œtoo little, too lateā€ especially if it doesn’t come with what I consider fundamental fixes. Brink is in some ways like a toy car which has many buttons inside, but they simply don’t work, you can press them all day long and nothing will happen. Examples:

 • dominance of SMGs: Medium and Heavy body types were supposed to trade speed for firepower. What firepower ?
 • heavy weapons are laughably bad. CARB-9 deals 348 damage per second, with 2.3 spread (0.066 rate of fire, 23 damage). Gotlung deals barely more damage (363 per second - 3 bullets * 8 damage at 0.066 fire rate) but it has much worse spread (4.0), long wind-up time and slows already slow heavies to a crawl.
 • Solution-looking-for-a-problem class, a.k.a. Operative (4 classes - 1 = 3 useful classes. 3 is not a lot.)

There’s no need for DLC. Just fix what’s there so it’s worth using.
